Watch for a pilot?
My oldest son is an electrical engineer who has been flying sine he was 15 yo
He is a Certified Flight Instructor Instrument and has all the certificates up to commercial pilot He passed the written exam for the Airline Transport Pilot and is accruing 1500 flight hours needed for the ATP certificate He should have the required hours in about 6months My question for the pilots on this forum is: What watch would be appropriate most appropriate for him to receive from his dad to commemorate the achievement? GMT, GMT II Breitling IWC Another brand He did not really like my 116613, but saw a picture of a vintage 5513 that he thought was cool Thanks for any input, Mike |

That he likes the Sub look but not the 116613 isn't surprising given generational differences with respect to gold. It bodes well, though, because the 'pilot's Rolex' as it were is the GMT Master, which it seems he would like the aesthetics of as they are more or less the same as the Submariner.
Do you think he would prefer a black bezel or blue/black? |

Thanks for the vote
Since he likes the vintage, was wondering if an original Pan Am GMT might be better? |

Any 16710 would be a super solution.

Since he is going to feel compelled to wear it (a gift from Dad), I would let him choose. The fun element of 'surprise' will pass in a few minutes, but the watch will probably be with him forever.

It is certainly GMT-II, which is designed for the piot originally. There are two options (with the two-color bezel because of GMT watch tradition) for your son:
(1) Vintage SS: Pepsi or Coke (SS bezel) (2) Modern SS: BLNR (Ceramic bezel) |

GMT Master II or a Big Pilot IWC would be my recommendations however I would let him decide.

Adam's right, of course. A watch is a very personal choice, but it's good to have a few 'options' in mind.
GMTs and the IWC Pilots would be the 'Big Two' for me. Any guy who can't pick one from that group doesn't like watches.

You can't go wrong with a BLNR in the cockpit! But you should still let him decide what he would like.

The Breitling worldtimer should be a strong candidate.

I would totally go vintage gmt... i think a Pepsi or coke would look great. Nice thing about those gmt is that you can swap bezel easily.
