Is this hallmark ok?
This is a rolex 18038 from 1978. Just realized there is a small "C" hallmark on the case back. Is it legit?

The hallmark for gold will be in the back of the lugs as I can faintly see in your pictures. Most likely that C inside a square is a jeweler mark or a retailers mark. It was not put there by Rolex.

Thanks. Why would a jeweller or even retailers want to do that?

Its a mystery. You see it all the time on gold jewelry too. Some of the marks are of known jewelers but most are unknown. I think its a calling card of sorts.

Import marks are pretty rare only a few countries (some European )required them and only for a short time period, not used in the uk, no Eu at the time this was occurring. Cheers

Well, im still quite confident that the mark on the OPs watch is a jewelers mark and not an import mark.

I took the watch to a service centre and I was told it probably was a mark the last owner put there, something like his initial

My day date 18038 from 1977 also has that C mark, in my case I have it on one of the back ears, it is the gold seal in South American countries, on my watch the origin was from Venezuela.

Are Beyer Chronometrie internal codes legit? I always had my doubts on these. Like honestly, why would Beyer want to engrave [god awful fonts I might add] some queer code onto the back of lugs? Referencing or archival?
From google, found a PP 3466 and a 1675 that appeared with these codes and literature from Phillips. https://www.phillipswatches.com/pate...ippe-ref-3466/ https://www.phillips.com/detail/rolex/CH080119/48 "The present watch is particularly noteworthy as the bottom of the lug is stamped with a Beyer number that is furthermore repeated on the guarantee, reinforcing scholarship that the storied retailer had stamped their watches with an internal code." |

France for example recquired import stamps for decades.
I‘ve managed a jewellery store in Austria (not part of the EU back then)in the 1980s and every piece of precious metal received an import stamp at customs. They even stamped AP RO‘s on the bezel ( and I am not kidding here). |
