Should I?

Hi,

Long time hawker first time poster.

Been looking for a Datejust 41 mm, black dial Jubilee bracelet yellow gold and SS for a while. AD called me after 6 months and said the watch in now stock. Thinking of picking it up tomorrow

Watch retails for $16000. Because this is a bit of money to drop on a watch I am wondering what is the resale value and demand on these watches

Any guidance is appreciated

Regards
Lucky A.

You’ve searched for it for a while, expressed an interest on it and now asking whether it’s worth it because of its future demand and resale value?

If you keep long term resale value is irrelevant, and you’ll probably wear the watch for pennies/break even. I suggest you go and take a look at the watch, put it on your wrist and see if it sings to you. If you’re looking for investment stay away from Rolex watches imho

Can't comment on the resale value but if the watch sings to you, I would say go ahead and enjoy it :)

Two tone watches do not do as well on resale as SS watches. You probably won't make any money on this watch, so the reason to buy it is that you love it. If you don't love it, don't buy it.

Resale value is not strong but its relative to how well you buy as well.

I tried that watch on the other day. Such a beauty and was tempted to pull the trigger but I already have my Rolesor (a Bluesy).

Buying a Rolex is not an investment, and soon or later we lost money with jewlery, but it is one of the jewels where you will least lose money.

Resale values on older DJs always are poor regardless of whether SS or TT. This could all change due to the demand on the Professional series however I wouldn't bet on it. There is only one reason to own the DJ and that is eternal love.

If the MSRP on a new watch is not justifiable, buy used. If you love it and can't stop thinking about it, and have the means, you should buy it. Life is not a rehearsal. If something is putting you off, you probably haven't found the right watch yet.

Why would you want to sell something that you waited 6 months for?

Buy it and enjoy wearing it!

I was able to get 15% off a TT watch recently, although I have history with the AD and bought two at the same time. (Happy Wife!)

There was a time when very deep discounts could be found on TT watches. You should still be able to get something for sure.

Two-tone DJ will tank in value if you buy it retail.

If you’re in this mindset now.....I’d hit up one of the trusted sellers here, and a find a next to new one for a great discount. If you’re buying to keep forever...then it doesn’t matter which way you approach it.

Look at prices for same watch on grey websites. Then subtract 20-30% off their price. That is likely what you'd get if you had to sell it.

If you are concerned about value retention for your money, you shouldn't have put the money towards a watch to begin with. There are financial instruments that will hold or grow the value of your money.

But then again you can't wear a mutual fund on your wrist, can you?

When it comes to watch ownership, the value retention is largely just noise. Owning a watch is about the joy it brings you when you wear it every day, I wouldn't let myself be distracted by the noise.

Seems you've been yearning for the watch, so why not just buy it and enjoy it and everything else should work itself out. But yes I'd aim for a discount

Check Ebay, DavidSW (used) and Chrono24, etc and you'll get an idea of the used resale value. TT are popular now but that does trend over the years. If you are not going to sell it, don't worry. Otherwise might be best to buy used and let someone else eat the new => used depreciation.

If you could find someone to buy it from you that's 100% legitimate, plan on losing thousands, not hundreds.

Curious about discounts in the current environment as well with regards to TT DJs in 36mm.

Co-worker/friend of mine is ready to make his first Rolex purchase. He wants a TT DJ 36mm with white stick dial, jubillee bracelet, and fluted bezel. DavidSW currently has a new one with plastics in place listed for $9,675 -- that's about ~14% off retail of $11,200 for this model. Friend would prefer to buy from an AD for his first time, but I am curious if he can get anywhere close to that price.

The value proposition here is if it makes you smile every time you look at it. Buy it. If that is not the plan, Don't.
