To be 100% sure it's genuine, the case should be opened

I will say no, there is better fakes out there than you can imagine. So I will always
vote for a hood lift.

What is best a custom Rolex or a Rolex that is stuck in custom?

Buy a professional camera and you´re a professional

I have seen fakes that cost upwards of $600 with Chinese movements finished to look exactly like a real 3135.

Sometimes, taking the back off isn't always definative.
I have also seen many times (perhaps once every month) fakes which have real movements. Some of the high end fakes do the following.

They buy/steal whatever a real ss sub.
Manufacture a fake case out of gold. Put the real movement in it.
Then, using the real ss case, they put a fake/eta movement in.
Easy way to sell two watches. An this method produces exceptionally high quality fakes. One with a real movement, one with a real case.

The only way to be sure, is to have the knowledge of both what the movement should be like (appearance and operationally) and also the exact peculiarities of the case dial and bracelet. You need to look at the whole thing. Not just the movement.

When I bought my Rolex, I was 99% sure just from the outward appearance that it was genuine. Bracelet, case and movement looked completely legit to me. But believe me when I say, I could not sleep at night until I took it in to Sydney RSC to have it properly authenticated. Cost me $99 and I got a great nights sleep after that.

Why risk it?
