Is AP twice as good as Rolex?
I’m considering trading two Rolex Hulks for the taupe ROO. Am I mad? Would you?

It’s comparing Apples to Oranges with the 2 watches you proposed.
If you are comparing 2 116610LV with a 15500, then yes I would say it might be worth it. The finishing on a RO is above Rolex. I’m not a fan of the taupe ROO so my opinion will be a little biased. If you were to trade for a ROO, get either the blue or green diver. Those two are my favourites. Good luck! |

AP is in a different league then Rolex. Having said that the particular offshore you have chosen is not worth 2 Hulks at today’s pricing. IMHO. You can never get another Hulk at retail again but there will always be ROO’s for sale, most with way better dials then taupe.

Yes for an RO. A maybe for an ROO depending on the model.

You really need the AP bracelet when concluding AP is twice as good as rolex

Can you sell the Hulk’s and then buy the taupe? If the hulks are that great…should be easy to sell and pocket the price difference. I think the ROO is a better watch, but probably not a better “investment” if that is your intent.

As a taupe owner who loves it, I'd say no. If trading two hulk's, get an RO Chrono which is more special and that bracelet is awesome.

Do it. You’re trading two $10k watches for a $40k one. There MSRPs are set that way for a reason.
You get an integrated flyback, smoked dial and exhibition case back. It is way more watch than two subs |

I love the Taupe, and value wise it’s close, but the Hulk is more iconic than this specific watch. At the end of the day, what do you prefer to wear more is what matters.

There’s nothing mad about it, it’s what suits you and your lifestyle. When the new ROO’s came out I tried most of them and went for the taupe straight away as to me there was something a bit special about it. So I’d be saying go for it in terms of a watch. Whether I’d be selling two watches to buy just one is always subjective and each to their own.
What I would say is having two hulks means you’re looking at investment rather than loving the watch itself. Whatever you do, sell one and put it towards something else. |

I'd say RO like openworked or ceramic is 9.75X better, regular steel 1.6X better, ROO 1.5X better... I kid, I kid.
You're paying a lot for the name, no doubt about it. I'd look at the decision differently. If the purchase is with AP boutique or London House, I'd go ahead and make the jump. If it's gray, I'd pass or just get the cash for now. And make sure you like the FIT!!!! There's really no need for two hulk unless as investment or future gifts. So a lot of the suggestions I think are spot on, let go of one Hulk and get into the ROO with the cash difference. FWIW, I think what will happen is that AP will continue to aggressively raise it's prices, as price increases and economy slows down availability will start to increase, BUT list price will still end up at very elevated patek levels so you might as well get in relatively early before they are done with the massive price hikes. |

Thank you for all the thought provoking replies. The interesting message for me is that it’s close. I think the right answer is to sell one (I bought two for my wife and I, so I’ll sell mine and keep her’s even though she’s happy for it to go) and find the top up cash. One last question. Is there anything I should know about ROO dials, which ones are good or bad? I like the taupe because, apart from the colour being a bit special, I like: 1. black subdials and 2. batons, not Arabic numerals. Are all ROO dials the same apart from these two distinctions? One response intriguingly suggested that I should be able to find much more attractive ROO dials than the taupe. So, on dials, what should I be looking out for?
Finally, I’ve been long Rolex since 2019. But I recently bought a 15400OR on strap and am astonished by my reaction, which is now to neglect some very sought after Rolexes because I love the 15400 so much. Maybe it’s just me. But at the heart of all this is how much more refined the AP is. Of course, any sports Rolex is very special too, in a robust, confident way. But there is something exquisite and delicate about the RO. Apologies if this comes across as gumph, but maybe someone can explain the difference with more insight than I can. |

I think some have lume some do not.
The biggest difference I have seen though, that the taupe reflects light very differently than say the black, where the texture of the dial is still noticable whereas the black sort of washes out the texture details and looks less dynamic. I think either Taupe or Gray/blue sub dials goes #1 in looks department. Taupe is very special, very unique especially coming from Rolex, nothing else looks quite like that dial. If you love the RO 15400, then no doubt you will likely love the new 43ROO line, assuming fit is right. Congrats in advance on the collection expansion! |

Personally I prefer this over the taupe dial but I’ve been told that I can be a really boring person at times.

PM if you prefer I have this reference (bought new from AP House last year) and you've certainly hit upon the nicest (yes, I'm biased.....) of the new 43 ROO range here unless you maybe go Rose Gold that is. Regarding the Smoke taupe dial....well, it's really delightful and I get positive comments all the time.....even from complete non-watch people! I would just say that, so far, the lume on the dial is not great but unsure if anything can be done about it or its "just an AP ROO thing" I'd agree that selling one of your Hulk's and adding the cash difference makes sense here but only if the ROO 43 is the watch you really want. Good luck! |

However, now I'm really drawn to the taupe, which shows the subconscious effect of social media and the preferences of others... So Taupe for me as #1, and the blue one as #2. |

I was offered the Ti blue dial and tried it on with the SS black dial and thought they were both amazing...but just a hair short of perfect. I wanted a ceramic bezel on the blue and for the black to be in SS. I then could of had the taupe or black, but turned down due to things discussed in my other thread and ended up getting the wife her 50th RO 37 instead. Now I am in pause mode to refresh the watch fund...with that said, I am ok with it becuase I am not 100% sold on any of the 43MM ROO, which will be my next watch (unless for some reason they offer me a 16202 or Ti Perpetual RO ). I am absolutely sold on the design, but after wearing both a Ti and SS model, I really want Ti. I don't love the grey and blue, but am REALLY hoping the release a revival of the "ghost" in Ti. All they have to do is put the right parts together from current watches...lol How great would that watch be with more strap options? Red, orange...baby blue...grey, black. Would kill it. |

if comparing MRSPs, that ROO is nearly 4X the LV, so one might say the AP is 4 times "as good" than the Rolex. But up to you to make that decision.

Ceramic blue sub dials is the best 43 offshore. I see more people have the taupe. I dont think its as common as the ceramic blue sub dial. I got offered a taupe before I could get mine.
