1978 Datejust questions, winding and added number
Hello,
I have a question concerning a 1978 Datejust 16014. Upon manual winding, the date numeral moves within the date window a small amount. It does not change the date, but rather shows a small amount of movement in the date window on a certain place within one rotation (not for the entire time you are winding it). It kind of jumps a bit within the window. Is this normal or something to be concerned about? Also, this watch has the serial number hand stenciled on inside of the bracelet clasp (the part that folds together). Was that a normal practice in the old days to hand stencil the serial numbers in this area? Or something to be concerned out? I was checking the watch out from a private seller for sale and was wondering if these two issues are normal? Thank you in advance! Mike |

It can happen with a 3035 movement due to the way the quick date setting and winding is set up. The watch will need a full service to rectify the situation.

Thank you very much for the info. So it’s not a normal thing for this series of watch. I will ask that they fix the problem. Any idea why the serial number would be stenciled on the bracelet?

No, it’s not normal. There is small pinion which engages the quick date and it rocks back and forth depending on the position of the crown. When in the wishing position it shouldn’t engage at all. Unfortunately, I am unsure of the bracelet number. Movements are more my area of expertise.

Thank you very much! I will convey this to the seller and hopefully he will fix it or reduce the price. Would this be considered a major issue or minor easy to fix problem?

It’s neither here nor there. There could be some damage to the wheel, or it could be a lubrication/dirt problem. The problem is indicative of the watch needing a full service though. One thing leads to another...

Everything within the movement is connected and when things get older, there can be some unintended interaction.
As to the bracelet number; some shops take the bracelet off and clean multiple components at a time. The number is engraved on your bracelet to ensure that it goes back on the correct case.
