Is the skysweller too big?

I love the look of the watch online/on paper, particularly on leather in white gold and black face. I just can't get over the size! I went to try one on again today and I am still not sure about the bulk.

I don't have small wrists, probabky 7-7.25, but at 5ft 7in tall I am not convinced I can pull one off? 40mm is probably perfect size for me and so 42mm is not OTT but I struggle with the Skydweller for some reason. If this was 12-13mm think and not 15+ I could maybe go for it.

No particular point being made here, just a disappointed rant

Your confidence will pull it off. Your wrist is big enough to pull it off objectively and a 42mm watch is not so massive that it will dominate your 5ft 7 frame.

If you're not entirely in love with it though, don't get it. You are investing a ton of money into it and you want something you'll truly love.

With a wrist that size you'll be alright. 5'7 shouldn't be an issue if you're not too skinny (and with that wrist size it looks like your frame isn't small)

Thanks all. Speedmaster is fine yeah. Oddly my wife thought it was nice, maybe I was just being a little conservative.

I wouldn't be buying new but am considering a potential trade. Would be 4 of my lesser watches and either a little cash on top to get the Skydweller, or a little more cash my way to swap into a good condition white Daytona 116520.

Based on MRSP the skydweller trade is a no brainier but we all know MRSP for rolex means little at the moment! Also seems there are plenty of 116520 hanging around a little while at the moment at these high teens valuations... Maybe if the deal is right and I won't take a bath if I don't get with it I could give it a shot...

I think your Freudian slip is saying it is for you. But your wrist size should be OK.

I too was also planning to get the Sky Dweller until I tried one on at the AD. It wasn't necessarily the size, but the thickness that changed my mind.

I don’t think it is too big but I did feel like it was heavier than all my other watches. At times annoying. I don’t know how it weighs compared to let’s say a dd40 but it felt a lot heavier. Awesome watch

I had a black dial SS and ended up selling it. I’ve got a couple of 47mm PAMs that I wear so I’m ok with big (and small) watches. Ultimately for me the proportions of the case and bezel were just too big. I’ve never really missed it.

I tried one on and while the size is at the top of what I prefer, the thickness really threw it off for me. I also find fluted bezels on 40mm plus watches a little too much for me aesthetically. I look at some of the phots here and it looks like you could serve shrimp on the dial!

I will give it another try one day though, I had tried on a two tone, would like to see how the SS black looks on my wrist.

Here is mine, I am 5 ft 8” and wrist is 7” it is a heavy watch but you get used to it, I have it in rotation with a sub and a daytona and it doesn’t cause any issues at all.

I think the steel/bracelet ones are 100% a no go for me. Having seem them online next to a Daytona the bracelet width looks massive.

I am tempted to give the leather strap a go. It wouldn't be a dressed up watch for me, more a casual to smart casual piece if that makes a difference so perhaps the size is manageable.

Wonder if I can change out the white GMT dial in the future ..

I've never tried it. Will do the next time that I see one. But I'm finding that I increasingly prefer thin watches that have a great balance. With top heavy watches being my least favorite option.

Size and weight can be fickle. I can wear a 44mm Panerai on a strap and DJII and it’s very comfortable but I couldn’t wear a 43mm SD50 comfortably at all. I have a 7.25” wrist. It was the weight and how it wore was the deal breaker for me with the SD50.

Same here. I loved the SD43. Really loved it. But it was so uncomfortable on my wrist.

What does it mean to “pull it off?” The answer is in your head, not what others think.

I have a 7 3/4 but pretty rounded wrist and I find the Sky Dweller is great on my wrist, I’d probably like it even better if it was a bit smaller, but I think it’s a pretty wearable watch for people with mid-large sized wrists it is a bit tall, but it’s shape makes it easier to slide under a sleeve than a similarly tall Sea-Dweller which has a much more upright profile.

I like the Sky-Dweller, at times I feel like it’s the favourite watch in my collection. Mine is TT so a bit flashier and if I was forced to decide to keep only one watch it probably wouldn’t be my Sky-D. If I had an SS, maybe it could be a one and only.

I thought you were looking at a Vacheron Overseas Chrono as well. How did it fit compared to that watch?

I wouldn’t say that it’s too big at all. However I feel that 40mm for Rolex is my sweet spot.

It's a big and heavy watch, but sits comfortably on my puny (but flat) 6" wrist. The lug-to-lug distance is the same as the top flat part of my wrist, so I think that helps.

Size/thickness are relative. After trying on a few panerais and DSSD, sky-d feels like a tiny ultrathin watch :-)

I have a 7 inches wrist and once tried a YG Sky Dweller, coming from a YG 36mm Day Date.

Of course it was bigger but I found it great on my wrist.

As for the weight, OP, if it is your first gold watch, it takes only one or two days of wear to get used to it.

Go for it. Rob Dyrdek is 5'7'' and wears a 44mm YMII. The man wears the watch, not the watch wearing the man. If you like it, go for it.

Lots of great comments here guys. Thank you!

I did get a Vacheron, the deep stream chrono on rubber strap. I really liked it, and sort of regret losing it so quickly, but I traded it along with a white gold on leather Daytona (panda dial) and a JLC calendar for a Patek 5396r with breguet numerals. The Vacheron overseas chrono was wide but pretty clum, and the steel and titanium colouring with grey dial made it quite subtle. Don't regret the trade, but I liked the OS chrono and the WG panda Daytona a lot! Also explains why the Skydweller would not need to perform any "dress watch" duties.

I love the comment about the man wearing the watch not the other way around. I did however sell a tag Monaco 24 a while back (for the Vacheron in fact) in fact, which was very cool, but square and bulky.

I'm not so concerned about other (non WIS) people's opinions but I don't want to look overly flash. That is not my style. Two of the watches I will be trading are grand seikos for example which most people will assume are $100 max. I like WIS to notice and appreciate my watches, don't care about the general public so much, but also don't want to look too in your face. I am 37, from a blue collar upbringing.

I will speak to the seller and if the price is right, such that I can move it on for minimal loss if I don't gel, then no harm no foul. I would rather try half a dozen watches and move on what I don't like than spend 6 months deciding on a perfect piece

i think you'd be able to pull it off but i think a sky dweller belongs on bracelet. i just don't see the point in dressing up a watch that big with 3 complications with a leather strap

I’m your size and recently acquired a 42mm Exp 2–although I’m not sure how the lugs and case height compare. I love it and before buying it was in the “40mm is my sweet spot camp.” Give it a go.
