<<<<< the rules >>>>>

<<<<< THE RULES >>>>>

WE are the WIS’s and in so being, we also maintain the sacred text wherein lie the simple truths of watch etiquette known as The Rules. It is in our trust to maintain and endorse this list.

For those struggling to understand exactly what it means to be a Rule Holist and embrace all these Rules, please review the following material:

Rule #1 > Obey The Rules

Rule #2 > Lead by example
It is forbidden for someone familiar with The Rules to knowingly assist another person to breach them

Rule #3 > Guide the uninitiated.
No matter how good you think your reason is to knowingly breach The Rules, it is never good enough.

Rule #4 > It’s all about the watch.
It is, absolutely, without question, unequivocally, about the watch. Anyone who says otherwise is obviously a tosser.

Rule #5 > Harden The F@#$ Up.
It’s just a watch forum

Rule #6 > Don’t be a jackass.
But if you absolutely must be a jackass, be a funny jackass. Always remember, we’re all brothers and sisters related by TRF blood on the forum.

Rule #7 > Arguing with a Moderator
Never do it, as you are guaranteed to lose. No matter how sure you are of your position, you are inevitably incorrect. Always. You may believe that common sense, logic, history and facts support your view. You are wrong.

Rule #8 > Be an enabler
It’s not enough to just say “buy the one that sings to you”, you must also give positive reinforcement to proceed with an acquisition. You should help with photo’s, stories, links, man-maths rationalisations and whatever else is needed.

Rule #9 > The correct number of watches to own is n+1.
While the minimum number of watches one should own is three, the correct number is n+1, where “n” is the number of watches currently owned. This equation may also be re-written as s-1, where “s” is the number of watches owned that would result in separation from your partner.

Rule #10 > Family does not come first. The watch does.
This is subject to Rule #9 above.

Rule #11 > Watches shall be referred to by their reference and model number.
This includes while discussing watches in the workplace with your non-WIS co-workers, serving to further mystify our obsession in the web of their Neanderthalic cognitive capabilities. As the confused expression spreads across their unbrowed faces. The use of acronyms, affectations and pet names is forbidden.

Rule #12 > Pronounce it Correctly.
All watches shall be spoken by the name given in its country of origin, and care shall be taken to pronounce the name as well as possible. For Swiss watches, it is preferable to choose the name given in its region of origin, though it is at the speaker’s discretion to use either the Alemannic or local pronunciation. The dialects of Swiss German must not be confused with Swiss Standard German, the variety of Standard German used in Switzerland. This principle shall also be extended to apply to watch tools, accessories, bands and accoutrements.

Rule #13 >
The watch on your wrist should be worth more than your car.
Or at least be relatively more expensive.

Rule #14 > Watches are to be measured by quality, not price.
Watches are to be measured by the quality of their movements and beauty and never by price alone. This is subject to Rule #13 above.

Rule #15 > Maintain and respect your watches.
Watches must be meticulously maintained. They must be cherished and when stored, treated carefully.

Rule #16 > Watches are made for wearing.
No long-term hoarding, investing or safe-queens. If you don’t love it enough to wear it, sell it to someone who does!

Rule #17 > Watch winders
Watch-winders are forbidden. End of story.

Rule #18 > No stickers.
Nobody gives a shit that you still have the stickers on your watch. If you have breached this rule AND Rule #16 above, then you must sell your watch immediately. If you insist on keeping it, remove all stickers, put the watch on your wrist and take a shower to initiate it (this only applies to waterproof watches).

Rule #19 > Make your watch photogenic.
When photographing your watch, gussy it up properly for the camera. Some parameters are firm: a good wash and dry, clean crystal or acrylic, any logo’s on crown to be at TDC (Top Dead Centre). No stickers must be visible (see Rule #18 above). The crown may only be wound out with thread exposed on vintage pieces. Others items are at your discretion, though the accepted practices include time set to 10:10 (without obscuring the seconds hand) and bezels to be centred.

Rule #20 > Tan lines should be cultivated and kept razor sharp.
Under no circumstances should one remove their watch in an effort to somehow diminish one’s tan lines. Never swap wrists to even out the tan.

Rule #21 > A watch must be worn at all times.
If you can take it, so can your watch. Your watch is made of metal, you are made of flesh. Battle scars add character.
Wear a watch appropriate to the activity. Examples include; Bucks party night before the wedding = Rolex 116660. Best man at the wedding = Patek Philippe 2499. Dalliance with the Bridesmaid after the wedding = Casio G-Shock

ADDENDUM

Rule #22 > Thread Hijacking
There must be at least one genuine reply to a post before you are allowed to Hijack the thread. Extra points if the hijack overtakes the original thread.

These RULES are a work in progress. Please add your comments, feedback and suggestions below.

PS. I acknowledge that some of the ideas for these rules were borrowed from various anonymous posters on the internet

With a little tweaking...I can see this becoming the 'Unofficial Rules for Conduct'.....

Now is there an Apprenticeship and then you become a Journeyman???

Adding the Hijacking Rule is a good start...but like Bob said we do have too many 'Rules In Life .....and I better Warn You, "I'm not very good at following Rules"... so you better not put me on the BOD or 'Rules Commitee'...

Take it easy.....Leo

I know this list is tongue-in-cheek but here are IMO important addendums plus one new additional rule.

Rule #9 - Minimum number of watches should be 1 (some have owned many watches but have finally found their one true friend
Rule #10 - Delete (nothing comes above family ..... nothing)
Rule #14 - To the statement "not price" add "or manufacturer" (if this list of rules are for "WIS" as a whole community not "WIS, Rolex" as a sub category)
Rule #17 - Toss out. Winders are an important tool used by many quality watchmakers
Rule #19 - TDC "your such a trouble maker"
Rule #23 - Watches will be referred to by their proper name i.e. a 114060 is a Submariner not a No Date Submariner

As far as I can tell there never will be agreement on what the so called "Rules Will Be" so I'm sure this idea/concept will never get accepted and become the "Standards".....so, no rules will rule!!!

It's like getting 6-8 people together to order a pizza...you'll never agree!!!

Take it easy.....Leo

Cut him some slack - he is from NSW.
