I’d keep the sub and get the Up/Down...in a heartbeat.

One advantage of strong Rolex values is that you can easily use them to flip into a brand like Lange. A dealer may even get you a hard to acquire watch ahead of his other clients to get his hands on your trade ins and make multiple transactions off your deal.

However you will get hit if you try and move out of Lange. If you do this, shoot for the hardest to get Lange that is increasing in value, if there is one? I wouldn’t know!

Rolexes hold value because they trade quickly. They are very liquid. Some really high end watches will take longer to sell so buyers pay less or want to list it on consignment.

I’m absolutely in love with the Lange Zeitwerk. I don’t live the price though.

IMO, these are entirely different watches at an entirely different price point and watchmaking level. They should never be compared in the same breath. ALS is one of the finest watch brands in the world similar to Patek.

Anyone that is blindly saying keep the rolex watches is all because of value retention. This is TRF after all, a new version of Wall St Journal.

With that being said, I would maybe start with 1 ALS (I chose U/D but Lange 1 certainly more iconic.. U/D more versatile IMO). This will give you flexibility to see how you like it before you plunge for the second one. Good luck!
This. Although I prefer the L 1, due to the date function. Go with what sings to you, and only you know.

I have an 1815 UpDown and I love it. I won’t comment on whether or not the trade you suggested is worthwhile, as only you can make that call.
ALS is a whole different league compared to Rolex though. Ownership experiences between the two are worlds apart.

of the two Lange I prefer the Lange 1. Buy it on the used market and keep all the Rolexes. I would think you will wear and enjoy the multiple Rolex watches far more than a dress watch.

Befor I make any move, would like to ask you guys if I am making the right choice.

Here is my current collection -
126710BLNR(Batgirl), 114060(Sub NoDate), 16570(Expii Polar)

My questions are -
1. Since I have to flip 2 watches, what would be the one watch that should be stay in my collection.
2. Between 1815 UpDown and Lange 1, which one will be better to join my collection?
3. Am I too crazy to flip 2 Rolexes to go for ALS?

Here is the shots I took from AD yesterday

You have 3 watches that I would not flip for anything in this world. I wound swap legendary and history for Haute Horologrie.

1. 16570 obviously. Batgirl is too blingy and more like jewelery, ALS is much better in this role. 114060 is a great watch but 16570 is better everyday/toolwatch, lighter and no blingy bezels.
2. Lange 1, it's unique Lange design, big date and subdials sells it for me.
3. Crazy is keeping overhyped and overpriced ceramic Rolexes which you can sell with a great profit now when the bubble is huge because of shortage.

I am a happy Lange owner and I can't give you an answer.

A Lange is objectively a very different watch from any Rolex. Different style, different wear situations, and objectively, at a much higher level of fit and finish. But I wouldn't take it to the pool, wear it mountain biking or hiking, unlike my Rolexes.

I can respect that people own Rolexes because they want something sporty, durable, reliable and comfortable. But there really is no equating them on a horological level, and I get that finish is not the end all and be all to every watch collector (e.g. you may value the Parachrome spring more for its function than all the beveling and anglage there is on a Lange which is good to look at).

It's not crazy but I would try to keep the trio you have (wonderful combination) and add a Lange somehow down the line. You will likely wear the Lange less often than the all purpose and more durable Rolexes so it makes more sense to have 3:1 ratio rather than 1:1.

Agreed... years back got to a level thru forum influence to kind of force myself to love dressier watches (pateks, als etc) in the end realized they were boring to me and just not me....

if it were really for you i think there wouldn't be a hesitation OP.... but BLNR is an amazing watch i wouldn't get rid of that

I personally don’t like the Lange 1 even though it’s a beautiful watch. But I love the UpDown.

Sport Rolexes are quite a different beast than these Lange. Are you selling to free up cash; if so are you SURE you won’t regret the swap down the line. Are you getting rid of what you don’t wear, if so the answer is easy to just part and move on.

I’d also consider just adding a Lange 1815 UpDown on the secondary market. I could be wrong but I thought they were like 15-20. I personally don’t think this is a high enough amount to move stuff as a liquidity event, hence the thought to add.

If you had a bigger collection I'd say yes but in this case I would lean no.

I’m a little surprised you got so much ALS love over here on TRF. That’s great. I’m curious what this thread would look like if posted in the WUS ALS forum.

IMHO, I like a diversity of brands in a collection so I’d vote for adding an ALS and losing one or two of the Rolexes. But like others have said, you will take a huge hit buying a Lange at retail, it’s basically the complete opposite of buying Rolex at retail. Please reconsider a well taken care of, lightly worn, Pre-owned Lange with box and papers. You’ll get so much more for your money and maybe only have to let go of one of your Rolexes. I recently bought a pre-owned Lange and got a great deal on it and it looks amazing. I also own a couple of Rolexes too so no bias. Both great watches and both have a place in a diverse collection.

If I had to choose, I’d go lightly used Lange 1 (bc I like the big date) and keep the Batgirl and Sub. Good luck with this tough decision !

I’d flip the batgirl and save up the rest. The other 2 are great and would complement the ALS. Trying to get them back if you regret it would be a pain in the ass in this climate.

1. Up to you. I'd get rid of the Batgirl since it is overhyped and overvalued IMO and the between the Explorer II and the Sub on one hand I want to say keep the Sub since I like larger 6 digit cases and better bracelets, but on the other hand I like GMT function. Keep the Explorer II I guess.
2. Since you'll be left with one watch, I think Lange 1 will fit better in your collection.
3. IMO yes. Because A) you don't pay MSRP for Lange, you can get unworn pieces for 25% off grey at least, B) I don't think the Lange is a watch for a 2 watch collection. If you kept all your watches or perhaps only got rid of the Batgirl, sure. But the way it is, I don't think so.

It depends on your reasonings to keep or flip, what do you see in the ALS that you like? Which of your existing are you attached or not attached to?

Personally for me Rolexes are too “out there”, I think ALS is more subtle but the true watch aficionados would appreciate it. So you might not get attention everywhere you go with it, vs the Rolexes, but I like this about brands like ALS because you don’t necessarily want attention everywhere you go, only from the select few who get it ;)

Am I crazy to flip 2 Rolexes to buy this?

Keep the 126710, sell the other two. Get the ALS. My vote is for the 1815.

Enjoy.

ALS is a better buy preowned, and even then be prepared to take a loss if you ever sell.
