Western dress codes

* Formal wear
o Formal
o Semi-formal
* Informal
* Smart casual
* Business casual
* Active attire

Business casual is a popular dress code in professional and white-collar workplaces in Western countries. In the United States, 43% of non-self employed workers commonly wear casual business attire. Casual street wear is the next most common work attire (28%), closely followed by uniforms (19%). Only a minority (9%) of workers wear informal business attire.[1]

Business casual has partially supplanted business formal attire wear (suits and neckties, sometimes called international standard business attire), which was previously the standard apparel for managers and professionals. Trousers complete the package.

Jeans are generally not acceptable in workplaces as part of business casual attire but some Silicon Valley entrepreneurs such as Steve Jobs are known to wear jeans as part of the business casual look.[2] In academic, research and office settings, however, jeans may be worn with a dress shirt. The second-from-the-top button may also be opened in addition to the very top button.[citation needed]. The most notable exception to this is the banking world, in which casual dress is both frowned upon and denigrated.[citation needed]

Neckties and cufflinks are generally not required for business casual dress. Of the 33% of men who wear a necktie to work, 60% wear a necktie occasionally, while only 18% wear them all the time.[1]

Business casual is sometimes equated with (or depending on perception, confused with) smart casual.

The current academy graduates this month. They are going back through the past list of applicants (who passed the written) and we're going through a Polygraph. I'm set to go for that in about 2 weeks

Best of luck to you, Mike!

(personally I've never fully understood the expression "business casual" - I guess this has to do with me being in the AD field, meaning you will see guys wearing jeans and sneakers 99% of the time... (don't get me wrong though, it can't be just any jeans and sneakers, there's got to be some "feeling behind it". After all, if you work in a design related field, I guess it won't hurt if you can show that you at least have some sense about fashion )

My brother though, who works in finance, knows everything about "business casual".

And as with so many other things, I believe this thing can also be a bit of a cultural thing.

Cheers,
Joe

You know, I've been interviewing a lot of guys lately as we are hireing like crazy right now, I have to say, as an interviewER, I will never fault a man for wearing a suit when he is interviewing for a job. I understand Business Casual, and I'm not suggesting anything over the top, but I don't see how you can go wrong with a regular universely-accepted suit and tie.

Just IMHO and Best of luck! Let us know how it goes.

FWIW, while you are proud of your Rolex, you might want to leave it at home during a job interview. It could certainly send the wrong message to your interviewer, unless you are interviewing for a HIGH value role.

I've seen other threads about wearing a rolex to a job interview and I'm not convinced it will make a difference. Even if one of the interviewers notice, which they probably wont, I think I can spin it in my favor if it was regarded in a negative way.

Although, depending on the situation, I may go without a tie, or wear a dark suit (instead of blazer and slacks) and go without the tie.

As an interviewer I would never ding someone for wearing a luxury watch. I have, however, dinged a guy for wearing tassel loafers.

Thanks to everyone who helped. The outfit I got at mens warehouse was perfect. we only saw each other in groups of 4. One was wearing a real suit, you know what I was wearing, one guy had nice shoes, pants and a button down, and one guy had a POLO but at least he was wearing nice pants.
