Very Sad

I was loving life with the GMT-Master II that my wife bought me for Christmas...I didn't take it off save for a few occassions that would have put its precious life in danger. While running about a month ago, I felt a weird vibration inside the watch every once in a while when i swung my arm. It started to happen more and more, so i decided to look it up online. I found story after story abour rotors that were worn down and other symptoms to listen/feel for...I read that if you put it up to your ear and hear the sound of something moving around, it could mean there was a problem. So i put it to my ear and heard a sound. Thinking it was coming from the bracelet, I took off the bracelet and tried again, and yes, I heard something coming from the watch.

I'm not sure if this is a sign of a big problem, or what this watch is supposed to do, but in the years I owned my Datejust, I never heard or felt anything. I called the AD that my wife purchased it from and they told me to bring it on in and they will take a looksee. It is still under warranty, but I am very sad that I cannot wear it and if it has to go for service, might not have it for a while. I am also concerned that when I got to the AD to hand it in, I might buy something else (can anyone say Yachtmaster??). Oh the humanity.

Have your wife bring it in for you. The chances of her buying you a YM are probably significantly lower than you buying it

Don't want to fire things up but I think he has just been truly unfortunate to get a watch with a fault. I wouldn't think twice about running in a Rolex! They have become high end jewellery but the movements were designed to be incredibly tough!

I know this was a GMT, but Milsub's were tough enough for the Special Boat Squadron!

To the OP... I hope this is sorted quickly and doesn't detract from your love of your watch. Good luck, buddy!

Its a wrist watch. They're mechanical devices. Occasionally mechanical devices malfunction. That's why you have a 2 year warranty.

Hey at least it is still under warranty. Besides what a perfect excuse to get one of these, not that any special excuse is necessary.

I believe there is a 12 step program for these buying problems. It wouldn't work for me, but I hear it exists. :-)

Sounds like the axle just needs some lube. Lately a new minimalist approach to oiling has crept into servicing watches is some cases it's warranted but sometimes I think it's just too little for the job. Quite a few of the newer Rolexes that come in for service seem to me to be underoiled just my opinion. I service 15 to 25 Rolexes a week and this seems to be the trend. Rikki

Thanks Rik. This is a U series GMT - just got it in December from a very reputable local AD. I am hoping that this can be resolved fairly quickly and easily (and cheaply, under warranty )

Really? Don't run with your Rolex on? I've been running, swimming, basketball playing, Harley riding etc., for years with my Rolexes and have never had 1 problem. Aren't Rolexes built to be durable tool watches?

Sorry to hear about your Rolex. The AD will have it fixed in no time.
I am sure that running while wearing it would not have caused a problem.

[touchy-feely] I feel your pain - the empty space on your wrist will help you appreciate the timepiece all the more when it returns to its rightful place...[/touchy-feely]

Now why would you run with a Rolex in the first place? Not that running should cause a mechanical issue in the movement itself - I agree with others stating it ought to be able to withstand the exercise.

But other things can result from running with a Rolex:

- A slip/trip/fall could cause significant road rash to the lovely bracelet/case/crystal. In 30 years of running I've tumbled - and as they say, there are 2 types of runners out there; those who fell and those who will fall.

- The centrifugal force on the bracelet links will eventually accelerate the inevitable stretch - maybe double the stress of normal use if you're a runner doing 30+ miles a week.

- In the unlikely event that a springbar released, the consequences are dire. You might consider a NATO for the runs to avoid stretch or unintended release.

- You miss out on the countdown timers, negative split calc's., etc. that inexpensive running watches offer. I'd love a running complication in a Rolex so audible cues could help me pace and sprint at the right intervals.

Not ranting on you at all - just saying there are good reasons to leave the precious one at home when you go for the run...
