can someone please explain me why the word REGISTERED has the first 2 letters much higher than the followings ( something never seen before ) ???

case looks strange too .. my suggestions :
1) bring the watch to a Rolex AD or to a skilled jeweler
2) open the watch and check it very well .

This is simply a bad photo angle playing tricks on you, it is even. Also this site required me to downgrade the resolution to nothing in order to upload. As for authenticity, I am dealing with the Certified Rolex jeweler who is currently measuring the bezel to get a GMT replacement.

thanks

Yip. Andrew Shear (a fine fella) sold a splendid 6542 Bakelite insert October 2012 at US $20,100. That was insert only, the sale didn't include a bezel.
And it was not quite as good as the insert Mike just showed us.

Another good fella that graces the forum pages occasionally (GlennBe) had a nice Bakelite insert available about a year ago.
From memory, Glenn's insert fetched around $ 15,000.

Crazy money for bakelite inserts but the buyers are out there.

Here is another exclamation dial same year. Same watch

Here is someone's opinion as to why.

Which coincides with the back case inscription dated April 1960

I love piecing together the history of vintage watches. My wife not so much, too much time wasted. I dissected a rare Illinois bunn special type 2 few years ago and turns out only 12 are known to exist. Feeling this way about this 58 dial

Yes, we know Rolex made exclamation point dials, as I posted in this thread. The one in your link is a Submariner dial, not 6542 GMT.

I see it now. The 6542 in your link definitely looks like your "exclamation point" dial!

Found the same exclamation dial in the iv 57 case that sold at Christies in 2010!!!

So with proper bezel and bracelet, this thing could turn out ok. :)

Now go find you that Bakelite bezel...post a WTB ad here and VRF. I bet you find one but, as mentioned, it might be close to $20k.
