I'm way down on the Pot stocks! With any luck maybe someday we will cash out even or up large.

Time for tax-loss selling for this year is fast approaching

Why?

No one has ever been able to explain to me how this makes money. This has not stopped the dealer down the street from me growing and selling, it wont stop anyone else either.

Bank regulations are still a mess, states and the Feds cannot agree. Even if they did there is massive over supply.

I wish you good luck

It will make us money some day. I have faith, there are too many variable coming in place beside smoking a cracker. Edibles, drinks, topicals, medecine etc. I am in for the long haul as I have no choice, and like Seth said, as soon as I sell, it will skyrockets.

Publicly-traded Cannabis Industry Companies

I sold out just under a year ago with a profit, but still way down from the peak. Bought PODD and am up 80% on them this year so I’ve got not complaints.

Sadly, I am thinking you are correct. It really won't help very much though.

At this point, I think I just want the extra cash for when the bubble finally bursts.

I just can't help but think this will eventually turn into something. Somehow in someway, the cannabis world will grow. Pun intended.

I would kick myself if in 10 years it is a monster.

Why?

Tobacco? Distilled spirits? Beer or wine?

Are those good investments? How big is the potential market?

I see limited upside to a legalization that wont stop home growers and until there is proven medical science and eliminated stigma this will always be a niche product. I have no doubt this will be a business for some but there are far too many players and far too many uncertainties at this point.

I would rather invest in what I can analyze and quantify. 5G, tech, semis, real healthcare like diabetes therapy, cloud stocks . . .

Hope is not a viable investment strategy.

The ultimate consolidation investment theory would suggest indexing the top 20 or so real companies and hold for that inevitable outcome.

What we won’t know for some time is the market value of refining CBD or THC oils for industry uses in food and compounds. That is where big pharma May stake a claim and fight for legislation that inches ya towards limited legalization.

Often it is the downstream derivative products that make the raw material suppliers their best ROI.

I think Federal laws will constrain the upward rise in value of the OTC consumer-use cannabis market.

There are not enough outlets, and there is overproduction. The stuff can't be exported so I think it'll be a while before it will be "booming"

Okay. Not enough outlets. Too much production.

Some producers will go out of business. The ones with cash will hold on. Then more states will legalize and more outlets will open.

I truly do see the potential for some of these guys to get enormous.

The challenge is picking the right ones. Or one.

to make money in weed you need to be the lucky few to get a dispensary license....print cash for the first few months then dump it on another investor before more licenses are pumped out

It's a long game and, in Massachusetts anyway, you burn copious amounts of cash going through a very drawn out regulatory process. Establishing a grow is an additional huge expense, if you want to control (legal) supply.

Once your first dispensary is open you burn the millions coming in getting your next license (you are capped at 3 recreational dispensary licenses in Massachusetts) and then your third.

The game is having a large supply of liquid capital and getting open before the majority of the competition. That's just to have a chance to make real money.

It's a very risky game and 75% of the cannabis market is black market. Until the state cracks down on the black market, it'll be hard to make real money despite seeing the gross sales of the few dispensaries open being north of $20,000,000 a year. The upside may be that hack heavy governments like Massachusetts' bloated beaurocracy need enormous amounts of tax revenue, and the black market throttles the large potential taxes that the hacks could get. Expect the death penalty to be enacted for selling a black market joint (joking, but I do expect a step up in enforcement).

Did I miss or did no one mention Cresco? What about innovative derivative products like Hempcrete?

Cresco still a great long-term secular growth story with their advantages over competitors. DOJ even reviewed their acquisition of Canadian company Origin House for anti-trust (somewhat legitimizing their business by proxy) and has shares listed in both US and Canada. Has lobbyist activities in US, Canada, and Mexico. The Cresco Origin House deal recently closed and if paying attention in 2019 one would’ve had a solid buying opportunity on the Cresco dip. Even if you don’t believe in the top-down story, Cresco has strong bottom-up story and can’t be completely ignored. 2018 Farm Bill in the US ended prohibition of hemp growth at the federal level, and interesting products like Hempcrete are poised to see explosive growth. Open your minds a bit and there are plenty of profit opportunities in this industry rather than anchoring to old philosophy.

just an interesting FYI. I am sure many people already assumed.

But...while I was away last week, my wife and I met another couple at the pool bar. We did some shots and did the small talk thing.

he is a grower in California. he confirmed that he, and literally everyone else, in the space sells both legitimately and on the black market.

he stated it was absolutely essential and that no one would be able to pay their bills otherwise.

I found that to be quite interesting...

he also brought quite a bit of his wares with him. he was very generous.

Just bought some APHA at $4.20

For full transparency I’m down some on my shares. My average is 4.95. I’m not worried though. Gonna probably unload around $6 or $7 a share. Good luck to all

Not good from the sound of it. However, I don’t see Constellation letting Canopy go under. Constellation basically controls Canopy now, they inserted one of their core execs as CEO, and they have money to spend/invest.
As a holder of both companies I hope I’m right.

When I was in b school one of my friends opened a dispensary in San Diego for the express purpose of sourcing stuff to send back east lol

He said it was ruthless out there and you could not make a buck. Saturated. That was like 8 years ago...
