20-year-old pretends to sell Nautilus, slashes buyer's face

Fortunately the victim makes it out alive:

https://sg.news.yahoo.com/youth-20-e...052833538.html

"On 13 July 2021, a victim, a 33-year-old male Vietnamese, asked to meet Tong to buy a Patek Philippe Nautilus 5711/1A on behalf of an acquaintance. Tong agreed to “sell” the watch for $115,000.

The victim brought $100,000 in cash stored in a paper bag for the meeting at 10pm. His arrival in a Grab car was observed by Tong, who decided to rob him. Tong approached the victim and brandished a penknife, demanding the cash.

When the victim refused, Tong tried to snatch the paper bag but the victim pushed him away and fled. Tong gave chase and pushed the victim to the ground, trying in vain to snatch the bag, which the victim clutched to him tightly. After the victim screamed for help, Tong slashed the left side of his face."

So meeting a stranger on your own at 10pm at night with 100K in a paper bag is not a good idea? Well I’ll be damned!

I was thinking the same thing... 10pm... $100k in cash... Like are you desperate??? How does that NOT raise red flags???

I'm glad the guy is OK and robber was arrested. But come on man... seriously... $100k in cash and meeting someone at 10pm...

Really bad planning all around. Who pays cash these days? That said, you gotta meet at a police station if you’re transacting that way

Regardless of where the transaction is taking place, it’s prudent to exercise good judgment. This unfortunate scenario was created by the absence of good judgment.

Agreed to sell the watch for $115k, so he bought along $100k.

Unlikely that someone with the intention to rob the seller would actually bring 100k in cash.

Maybe the robber brought a real 5711 with him, just to make it look good!

Probably got that 5711 from a previous successful robbery.

He was going to try and talk-down the seller. Classic sleezy buyer behavior from someone who thinks they're good at "business" but are essentially just another iteration of a scammer. I'm not defending the robber, but this guy also clearly did not intend to honor the deal. I had this happen to me once - was selling a collectible item to a fellow enthusiast (or so I thought) for $700 and the finance bro turned up with $400 and exhaled this is the new deal. He thought I really needed the cash. But I didn't need the cash, I only wanted to pass along an enthusiast item to someone whom I thought was a fellow enthusiast. When I realized this was the M.O. all along, I laughed and walked. Later sold the item for $1k instead. The moron was so preoccupied with trying to rip someone off that they didn't even realize they were getting a good deal.

This was years ago now, but it was the first and last time I will ever do an in-person meeting/trade.

seriously, a lot of this story is befuddling. How/why show up with 100k (not 115k) cash at 10pm in an Uber ?
