226659 (YM42) vs

Hi All - anyone have the 226659 (YM42) and another Rolex - how does it compare? Does it feel much bigger than a sub/GMT? Much smaller than SD43? etc... Looks bigger than I would think in videos, but comments say it fits well...

Well, let’s compare with the 43. It’s noticeably smaller, slimmer and generally less bulky. An obviously different watch. Compared with a ceramic Sub it’s a bit larger but the slimmer lugs reduce the difference and , again, the thinner profile is striking. The thickness is similar to a Daytona, as is the general curviness of the case, although it’s certainly a fair bit bigger than a Daytona.

You have to try for yourself because this is all subjective. But it’s not a bulky ‘dive’ watch, more elegant than that. You could get a fair idea by trying a 40mm rose gold model. It’s not so different in size.
I should add that the Oysterflex also cuts down on the appearance of bulk. But no two people have exactly the same views on these issues.....it’s a shame that trying these watches can be so hard. I had to buy having never tried one on my wrist. Although it was fine,luckily.

Doesn't feel bigger on the wrist than my 40mm sub. Its heavier but that disappears on the wrist. The contoured case and oysterflex make it wear smaller too. It would feel considerably smaller than the SD43 IMO.

Thanks for the feedback - crazy to not be able to try on... Looks big in videos, but sounds like that is just the vids. I get that it feels smaller - does it look big (I know that may be a weird question). I have an SD43 that feels fine, but looks a little big to me.

Doesnt look big to me since you cant see much of the case outside the bezel. Its pretty svelte

I tried one on and it was incredibly comfortable ... an exact fit at the AD as sized. I should have bought it, but somehow the color scheme was just too clinical. But, the watch was incredibly comfy and just the right size to me.

Is been quite some time since I tried it on but I remember thinking, damn that’s a beauty.

For me the only issue was the price when you’re not getting a metal bracelet. I understand that many here love the oyster flex bracelet, but if I’m buying a PM watch, I’d want the full Monty. YMMV

But with a gold bracelet it would cost many thousands more, all the gold bracelets do. so in what way is the Oysterflex a less fair price? And remember that it has a large solid gold clasp, now with flexilink. The actual rubber bits are a small part of the cost. About the same as two gold links.

You're absolutely right.

In Canada the mrsp of the WG Submairner is $46850 cdn.
The YM42 is $34100. Personally, I'd still rather spend the extra thousands to have all gold.

I'm very curious to see how these oysterflex straps hold up over 5-10 years of wearing. Especially those that see alot of sun

Tried on today and liked it - still tricky to decide about size. Wears quite a bit bigger than 40, but super cool. As pretty much a one watch guy (other than some old watches) this could be the one.. Stealth, but cool. Would likely sell my SD43 if get this one though - doubt would wear both - if get this why not wear it....

Well, I’ve been wearing one as an ‘only’ watch for six months now. Still gives me a sense of pleasure.

Where I live, 7.8k euros extra get me a full gold Sub 41 with a proper bracelet. That's where my money would go, no hesitation.

Fine; but they are completely different watches. Put them side by side and you will see that. As for ‘proper bracelet’ ....have you tried an Oysterflex? I’ve owned both, and think they both have things to offer.To me, the Oysterflex is more comfortable and more stable on the wrist....which with a heavy gold watch really matters. There is a choice to be made, and it’s not simple.

It is thinner than a Daytona. It's wide and flat. The OF is very adjustable with the glidelock. It is very comfortable and low key. Stealth wealth. There is room for it in any collection alongside all precious metal pieces. Both serve their purpose.
