Trade for first Patek? 5980
Would you trade a Mint/Complete Rolex Daytona Rose Gold on bracelet black dial model 116505 for the following watch+Cash
Patek 5980R on strap rose gold + 45k (BNIB)? The focus on is ONE timeless Rose Gold piece and this would be my first Patek which I seen to love the most after trying on. Thoughts? Long term equity, timelessness etc...?? |

seems like a decent deal, low 40s for your watch is current pricing plus $45k puts it in mid to high 80s and a 5980r on strap can be had for around $90k albeit they aren't in ultra high demand like its bracelet counterpart. The 5980 is a beautiful watch and I don't think pictures do it justice, people have a varying opinion on the "CD" chronograph dial and it does wear a little top heavy. Rubber B makes a lot of other great color straps, it looks great on the grey rubber.
What else is in your collection?

No way you're getting $45,000 more enjoyment out of the fragile odd looking Patek.

I was talking to my AD about it and they said they get less 5980Rs than 5980/1Rs |

For me the beauty of the Nautilus is rooted in the bracelet-case combination. Not interested in the strap models. |

The 5980R is a great watch, but for me personally I’d want the bracelet version. Otherwise if you’re set on rose gold I’d be looking for a 5711/1r, although that won’t be easy to find for retail.

Yep, jam with Russ. The 5980 R is a wonderful piece but sooo much more special on bracelet. If I were spending that much dinero , I would get either 5980 R on bracelet or 5711R on bracelet bracelet. Me thinks you could get one for maybe 5 grand more. Resale would be far better if later you want to or need to cash out. It would be very difficult to sell the strap model 5980 unless you offered it under current asking prices- after all we are talking about 90,000 dollars ! JMO Wish you the best either way. You will throw stones at the Rollie after you get the PP ,Ha! james in San Antonio Tx

Nautilus without the signature bracelet is like a plane with no wings. Don’t get me wrong, the gold strap still looks stunning though!!

While I agree the bracelet version of watch is ideal that isn’t a realistic option in this trade. The Daytona is lovely, but not collectible in any tangible way. Ultimately it’s one of many dial and case combos, etc. Anybody would much rather have the SS version, that’s just the way it goes with Rolex.
With the Patek you move not just out of the neighborhood but to a whole new city. A better city with better neighbors. I’d do that trade in a heartbeat.

From someone who slowly climbed up the ladder, I would say once you get yourself a PP is like reaching the pinnacle. I truly enjoyed the whole process which has been 12 years so far.
I would say once you wear a Patek, you cannot go back. I thought I was quite satisfied with my Royal Oak, but nothing beats an Aquanaut. As for your trade, I would do it in a heartbeat. Best of luck and keep us posted.

Since you ask about long-term price, the question you have to ask yourself is - if the 5980R market price went from the current $90k+ USD to close to its retail price in 5 years, would you still be happy with the watch or would you be kicking yourself you paid a premium on this watch? |

I would do the trade any day.
You are getting a Patek Rose Gold sports model, with reasonable price. Try walk into an AD with no relationship and get a 5980R. You probably have to spend 100k to 150k on some annual calendar and one or two ladies Patek pieces. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

You’re about $60k into the Nautilus. Pretty fair.

I would do it for the blue 5980, very good looking and important Patek chrono. Would need more cash though and make sure full set and ideally Geneva seal version. If you’re really set on rose gold try get the 1/R version but you’ll need to put down a lot more.
