2 Months on the Wrist...Observations of the SS Daytona

Okay, first off this watch was an incredible gift from my wife on our 30th anniversary. And yes, I teared up when I received it. I’ve wanted a Daytona since the early 1990s. There were many other responsibilities and priorities along the way. When I was finally able to buy one, well, it was impossible.

I thought I would share a few observations and pics.

Dial:
* I love the white dial, clean lines and symmetry; I could stare at this dial for a long time and not grow tired of it; it’s the first white dial Rolex I’ve owned, the red Daytona text is mesmerizing
* Sometimes it's a little hard to quickly ‘read’ the time when I’m in very bright daylight or conversely if the room is not fully lit (I have to tilt the watch a little to get a clear view of the hands)
* The lume is about the same as my DD, which is to say just barely enough to tell the time at 3am (yes, I wear my watches 24x7)

Comfort / Fit:
* The weight of the watch is amazingly balanced and fits perfectly on my wrist (7.3”)
* It’s more comfortable in some ways than my SD, BLNR and DD which surprised me; lighter on the wrist for sure (though I like the heft of the DD)
* Sometimes I don't even feel like I'm wearing a watch

Function / Finish:
* I really like the chronograph and screw down, push buttons…I don’t race cars, but the movement and technical aspects of the watch are impressive and fun to use in daily life
* The bracelet: PCLs…some may recall I brushed my BLNR bracelet down years ago (still love that look) and swore I’d do the same to any Daytona I had...okay that was stupid, there is NO way I would ever brush these PCLs as they are so beautiful and appropriate for this watch

Other:
* For some reason this watch seems to grab more attention than my RG DD when I’m out shopping or doing whatever. Wasn’t really expecting this, and I’m not into flashy statements or seeking attention.

Thanks for reading and enjoy the pics. I know how very fortunate…err, blessed I am to have such a beautiful timepiece. And, while I’m grateful for the watch, I am more grateful for the love of my wife, my many friendships and the care others have shown to me over the years. It’s been a long, hard journey filled with moments of joy along the way. Receiving this watch was one such moment.

Happy Thanksgiving to all who celebrate it!

Good review when you say grab attention is it people saying nice looking watch. Or people who actually realize it is a daytona

Congrats on the watch. I’ve had mine since my birthday in September. My wife surprised me with it as well. It’s an amazing piece, I wear mine more than the rest in my collection.

Happy Thanksgiving ! i tried one on a couple of months ago and was surprised at how light it was! im used to the heft of an Exp II and this Daytona felt so light.

I have not been able to get one, maybe someday....enjoy your new watch! wear it in good health !

Congrats, it’s interesting to note that every professional grey market watch dealer I have ever met in person wore a Daytona, so they must know something we don’t

Thanks. Yes, the watch has elicited both comments and what feels like long stares from guys who realize it’s a Daytona. No one has ever really said anything about the DD. Not a big deal, just a bit surprised.

Congratulations, a lovely piece.
Very special gift from your wife who has fine taste.
Enjoyed your review, and whilst I don’t have one yet, some of your thoughts have been similar to mine following trying them on several occasions.

Fantastic watch, congratulations on this and your Anniversary.

On a related point - how is it that we men seem incapable of ever getting hands on these steel beasts, yet I see story after story on here where the wives present unobtainable after unobtainable? Does this perpetuate the rumours that the watches are there all the time, but need a “story” to tease them out?

Not much going out these days. If I want attention I pull my mask down and people treat you like you got your junk hanging out in public. Watches they don't notice.

Great write up of your Daytona. I to own a white face Daytona and second your comments. One point I'll add is when wearing the Daytona I often look at the watch to see what date it is then realizing this watch is dateless. No big deal just a habit. Your photos show the watch very nicely. Congratulations.

Purchased my white face via a trusted seller here 2 months ago, black face this past Monday via the AD. The balance is spot on. Find myself checking the time every 10 minutes for some reason.

Thank you! We are blessed with a friendship with our AD...whom I would be friends with even if he wasn’t an AD...just an incredible human being.

Thank you very much. I do find myself looking down for the date since I’ve always had a watch with a date. But, I’m getting used to keeping track of the date.
