Congrats on your watch. You seem like the kind of guy who would have done these things anyway - going in, checking out watches, chit chat, repairs, etc. Glad they appreciate people like you and you got the watch you wanted quickly.

Congrats on the Sub! You’ll love it forever. I got my first Sub 20 years ago and it’s still my favorite watch.

Great essay, too. I am more living proof that the “Doug Method” works. My approach is the same, and although I have little spending power I tend to get the watches that I’m after in a matter of weeks or months, including the celebrity models. It helps that the AD I’ve been going to for the past 8 years is staffed with genuine, honest friendly people. It sounds like yours is the same way.

Unbelievable you have to jump over hurdles to get a watch at full retail now. I remember 10 years ago calling AD's that I had never spoke with and negotiating a discount over the phone with no problems what so ever. They were surprised I even showed up and happy to make a sale.

Relationships go a long way. In 2010 at lunchtime, I'd walk to the AD a few blocks
From my office and a with them every 6 weeks or so. Plus I had a TT serti sub I frequently wore. I fell in love with the yg gmt green dial. Unfortunately, at then 24k
I could not afford it. But I found I lived the GMT. So one day, I called the store and offered a stainless gmt purchase.
I didn't care if it was from the display case
Or not. I offered a purchase of a 15%
discount and 1 year interest free financing
With money down. They spoke to the owner who agreed. I got my 166710ln
For 6301.01 with an msrp of 7000. I was ecstatic.

As an afterthought, I never thought I'd get
A solid gold rolex. A few weeks ago, I purchased a 2006 yg sub blue dial box and papers. The seller had it fully overhauled and polished so like new. Funny how it cost more than the green dial gmt I wanted
Back in 2010. That said, I'm ecstatic.
