Both work well on cordovan, IMO. The cordovan cream is much more rich with oils and works best when you let it soak into the leather overnight. In my experience, you also need to brush the shoes much more after applying cordovan cream or else you’ll get some build up in the rolls of the shell.

Bick4 goes on super easy and doesn’t require too much work.

IMO, Bick4 is good to use regularly and the cordovan cream is best when you want a real deep nourishing.

I guess for whatever reason I have a thing against not using things on my cordovan that aren’t specifically for cordovan. I may just have to get over that.

What about Venetian shoe cream for Cordovan? I’ve read that’s what the Horween family recommends.

Well, shell has been used as a material for shoes/boots for over 100 years. I’ve seen some shell boots that were from the civil war, even. I think a lot of the shell-specific products are newer inventions that are a result from the rise of shell popularity.

I do think that shell-specific products are the best option for shell, but there are some generic leather products (Bick4) that work well, too.

I’d pass on VSC. It has a high turpentine content which is not good for shell.

I stay away from it for anything because it has turpentine.

By the way you’ll find all kinds of various companies endorse all kinds of different products. I’m not a chemist or leather expert but for now I’m extremely comfortable with Bick4.

Thanks for the advice guys. I will pass on VC. Safe to assume Saphir Reno neutral is a safe call?

Reno also has turpentine. Stick to cordovan cream and mild cleaner/conditioners like Bick4.

Reno doesn’t have turpentine, it has kerosene and some other OSHA revulated compounds (see post 405). I have reno in my kit, but mostly use it on non-apparrel leather items.

Hmm, good info and thanks for the correction. I don’t know if I want kerosene on my shoes, cordovan or any other leather for that matter...

I like Saphir cream for shell. Easy to use and produces that "like new" shell shine. I use Bick 4 regularly and the cream every few months depending on how often worn. I should add. I use minimal amounts and very light coats. Generally, just brushing my shoes and taking care of the soles does the trick. I did do a full Saphir cream treatment on a pair of loafers the other day, but it had probably been a year.

So I guess I made of bit of a mistake that day.

Tried on the leather galway on the 82 last, but not the suede galway on the 202 last which is supposed to be a bit wider.

Considering doing an MTO galway on the 202 if it fits better than the 82. That way I could pick exactly the leather and color I want.

EG said it would take about 14 weeks. Leffot can place those orders as well.

The 202 Galways look good, but IMO, Galways look best on the 82 and 64 lasts. 82 if you want something sleek and 64 if you're going for a real country boot look.

If the 82E is too tight for you, you may consider the 82F.

It is a cleaner and conditioner so it always did seem to remove some finish. The last straw was when someone on Style forum who ended up with most of his shoes cracking claimed that Reno was a contributing factor. I believe he said he thought he used it more often than he should, but the whole thing turned me off. Anyway I found the product to be a bit harsh. I do think it odd to combine a cleaner and conditioner in one product. Somehow I think those two things to be at opposite ends of the spectrum.

Regardless which Last you choose you’should have the same options. However it just depends which one you find more pleasing and more importantly which one fits you best.

There have been and probably still are some shoes and boots EG does not allow you to order on certain Lasts. However this list changes from time to time and when going Top Drawer you have even more choices but it’s going to cost you.

Anytime you have the opportunity to determine your size in a Last and you don’t you goofed. However for those that have multiple opportunities to do so it’s not such a big deal.

Navy loafers came in . Good choice. Very happy with the color and style. This is my third pair of similar navy in last couple years and the other two are too dark. Almost black so this is exactly what i was looking for. The stitching is actually more tan/gold than appears in the pic.

Thanks guys. These have the blake welt. Little lighter and less rigid than the goodyear welt but still rigid enough that you know you have a well made shoe on. Good welt for this type of shoe IMO. Going to order some black shell now!

The. Bick 4 worked great on my shell cordovans. Does it work well for chromexcel also? I’ve been using Cream Greasy Leather from Saphir.
