In the end, whatever watch I will get will either be mine forever or be used to trade up for another watch or another toy.

It's probably safe to say your money is more easily liquid in a Rolex. A SS sub or Daytona will probably hold up better than a similar AP. However, if you buy an AP correctly, you won't lose much, and might even make a little. I don't feel they are as liquid as a Rolex, but they certainly will sell quickly if its a popular model. Then again a BMW is easier to sell than a Bentley (or pick your car analogy). More people can afford a Rolex than an AP. Get one, and enjoy the hell out of it please!

Question is: Is the lure of the 15400 worth a bit less liquidity / a bit more depreciation (i.e., maybe about $500 loss at purchase and a few hundred a year)? That's the marginal cost to play.

If she is really worried about resale just tell her you are getting into AP at the right time as they are becoming more popular. Unlike Rolex that makes over 1m watches per year AP only makes around 30k. With APs popularity growing (show her all the incoming threads and posts on TRF) they are going to be in short supply. With demand growing and such small supply the prices can only go up...Right? We all know this prob isnt true but it sounds good in theory

That's one of the reasons that I like the AP. Most don't even know what it is and I rarely see one in the wild. I see so many Subs out there its not even funny. This weekend in the keys I bet I saw at least 6 subs and I actually saw a Pepsi GMT like mine as well.

I just cant get over that RO dial! Its mesmerizing!

There's a reason why people are still buying APs and VCs despite all these worries.. There's 'something' in them that just won over everything :) .

If it helps in your positioning, I've made or would make money on liquidating my APs.
