Best talking watches episode in a long time (ever?).
Would love to see more of this collection.

Was a fun interview to watch. That said, by FAR my favorite is Jean-Claude Biver. His enthusiasm was contagious AND he did most of the talking...

Thanks for sharing. That's literally a collection fit for museum.

Honestly, great collection… but the episode felt highly detached compared to other episodes. It seems like the owner himself doesn’t know much about the watches, instead it was left to the curator to do most of the talking regarding the details of the watches.

Memorable episodes to me were Jason Singer, JCB, Morgan King, JM 1&2, Alfredo Paramico, Daniel Dae Kim. These are the ones that left a greater impression on me compared to this.

Nice but there are some important pieces missing from the Hodinkee video, like his Simplicity and RRCC. That RRCC is a gift from Hourglass (now we know why these watches are so hard to get).

Fair enough. Truth be told, it's never the watches that grab my attention in these episodes - it's the collector: his/her passion, enthusiasm and knowledge. Gets me every time.

he's an old man, too many watches. all too similar with different slight variants.
at least he bother to employ a curator and in house watch maker to ensure they're all taken care of properly.

Besides the amazing watches I really like the idiosyncrasies of the video:

The subterranean vault
"time and money"
“New new”
The Home Depot table with carpet top holding $50,000,000 of Pateks
The watch maker sitting off camera
“If God is kind to us”

Yup. Struck me as compulsive accumulation rather than appreciation and/or emotional attachment. I love Talking Watches when the subject gets damp-eyed about the watch in his hand - it can be a Timex or a one-of-a-kind Patek. I don't want a 'curator' wheeling off the details while the owner stares into the middle distance disinterested.

Did he own both already in 2013-14?

Agreed. Obviously a giant amount of very impressive, expensive and unique watches. But I sensed zero passion. Way more interesting to see JC Biver, or John Mayer or John Goldberger, or Renee Beyer (we spent some time in his store in Zurich when we were there because of it).

It could have been the language barrier, but I felt like the gist of it (being unkind here) was: curator said it was important, I pulled strings and wrote a big check and bought it.

I actually wondered if it may have something more to do with senility. Albeit politely, he may no longer remember the models or why they are special...it’s my only thought that came to mind when watching otherwise why did he even go on the show…trying to give him the benefit of the doubt (as we will all be there someday), but I get you.

I wish there was a company that still made those simple steel calatrava cases with a black/silver/whatever colour dial with breguet numerals at <36mm.

I really really really want something like that as my only watch.

Apparently ‘The Oak Collection’ can be viewed in London May 19 - 25. https://www.oakcollection.watch . The website is quite good. It has an audio guide for all of the different watches. I really appreciate how he has gone about this to benefit the knowledge base of the watch community. This is one of best collections I have seen. Well done.

Collection is phenomenal.

Try to get there if possible if you live near London.

Hard to get the iPhone to focus with the lights

Still lost for words.
To see so many incredible pieces in one place, but it was another level, so many of the rare references are either one off pieces or special order / limited run.

I feel this is a better video explaining the collection rather than Talking Watches.

Thank you for sharing this video. It provides context as to what he has achieved. This is such a remarkable collection. I feel as though calling it ‘a collection’ doesn’t do it justice. He has amassed such deep verticals in his collection, while I am astounded by its sheer breadth as well. It is really something to behold. I have been humbled, while simultaneously impassioned with appreciation.

Thank you for sharing this video, which is much better than Talking Watches indeed. The passion comes through. I hope the collection comes to the US. Looks like a must-see.

I got a kick out of seeing two Datejusts prominently worn by the head of the Design Museum and Mr Getreide's watch consultant.

Mr. Stern looks rough. He has gained a lot of weight and somethings going on with his left eye.

I hope he is okay.

Went to see this collection today. It’s unreal! Someone said it’s humbling, it is and that’s weird. Lost count of the number of one off watches. The man is a legend.
