When is a Watch considered Vintage?

Is it just me or has there not been a “How old is considered Vintage” thread for a while?

You may have just inadvertently created a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Ah yes, another question that has become vintage itself

I'm more curious about when a forum member is considered vintage.

LOL. I saw a thread recently about a 4-liner 14060 and someone wondering if it was vintage or not. It might have been sarcasm.

Even neo vintage has started to be a melting pot of things that probably don't quite deserve the name.

The term “Neo-Vintage” was invented by dealers to sell watches to guys that were priced out of 5513,1675,1680,1016. So let’s call 14060,16750,16800,14270 (neo)vintage and get ‘em sold and make guys feel like they are in the club. And it’s progressed from there even further.

Ah yes.. . the often misconstrued neo vintage. I prefer the references "vintage" and "the classics." The classics being the discontinued models that came after the vintage era.

Let's call them correctly - Calling a late 40-year-old GMT 16750 neo vintage is just wrong.

Good point. A nice Mattedial acrylic 16750 should make the vintage cut!!

I can’t believe this is actually turning into the discussion that the whole point of this post was making fun of.

I can't believe it either Andy. Unbelievable. Maybe we should just have more "What's it Worth" threads to get us through Fox news as we surf the web at night.

As Indy said, “It ain’t the years, it’s the miles.”

It would be better fun to ask how many seconds until it’s vintage.

I think many around here are going to have a hard time stomaching that things from the '90s are now firmly considered vintage.

The only thing I can add is that in my book, and I'm sure most will agree, is if it doesn't have lug holes and a matt dial it's NOT Vintage!!

I try to keep it simple. In my mind, I refer to them as:

Neo-vintage - If Luminova / Super luminova dial was original
Vintage - If Tritium Dial was original

I thought about splitting it between just 5 and 4 digit references but I think there are a lot of 80s 5 digit references I'd consider vintage.

If it's from before this century, it's essentially vintage. I'd say anything pre-SEL era, at this point, and we're not all that far away from vintage being everything 5-digit and older.

I assume it’s called “old” if you’re trying to sell it, and “vintage” if you’re trying to buy it.

Oh. My 1969 WG 1803 Day-Date doesn't have exterior lug holes, AND has a glossy dial.

I'd thought it was vintage, but I stand corrected.

(I know you were referring to sports models. Just having fun. )
