History of the Explorer

I've always heard that the Explorer was originally introduced in 1953. However, I recently saw this advertisement that I think is from the '40s and lists an Explorer. Anyone know anything about this and when the Explorer was first truly introduced?

Interesting if it is from the 1940s, and some of those other names do suggest that decade. According to the Dowling & Hess book, Rolex registered the Explorer name in January 1953.
