Buckley Dial

Is the John Buckley still trading in New York the same 'John Buckley' that designed the Buckley Dial ? I am aware that the 'Buckley' dates from the 70's but just wondering if this guy was the original John Buckley

It's the same John Buckley, but he didn't design the dial.

As I understand it he was the first Rolex enthusiast to emphatically bring that dial style to the attention of the community, and as a result, eventually, it came to be known as the Buckley dial.

Buckley Dial

It’s one of the best looking plain painted/screened dial in the Rolex panoply.

Buckley…

Not Buckley…

Here is the most impressive Buckley dial I've ever seen.

I don't know who this DD belongs to - I don't even remember where I found the picture - but I sure would like to have one like it.

Amazing watch. I kick myself every day for passing on a mint WG blue Buckley 1803 years ago. Such a classy watch.

The white Buckley with the black hands is so cool. I put this set on my first vintage DateJust.

Yes that’s the one, but not the designer - I think Beyeler if I am not mistaken, was producing these dials, I personally like the fat font Roman

The dial is a bit busy for my tastes, but I do like how they have the characteristic "IIII" rather than "IV."

Maybe just a conspiration theory, but what I figured out, that the white dialed Oysterquartz was the first watch, which was manufactured in serial with the so called Buckley dial. I think, the idea could had been to made a visual difference between the OQ and the DJ. It may be also possible that they intend to concealed the quartz movement and to made the look more traditional.

However whatever was the reason, I think, that as usual, there were several customers who liked this dial, but the quartz movement was not, and therefore they asked for this kind of dial for their DJ/DD. In this case, Buckley could be the only one person, who was able to slightly push Rolex to manufacture them roman dial DJs/DDs. This could be the reason why all the first series white OQ was manufactured with this kind of dial, but only some of the DJs/DDs was ever built with this dial.

But I may be wrong about this :)

He’s actually active on TikTok and it’s pretty cool seeing him do all his watch deals. I think his name is “tuscanyrose” on there, if you’re interested.

I also enjoy watch his TikTok content. Great behind the scenes look at the watch business and cast of characters on 47th street. Highly entertaining imho

What’s interesting to me is that I actually bought my first vintage Rolex, a GMT, from John Buckley. That was a long time ago, but still have that watch too. A few years after that I started looking at Day Dates and came across the Buckley Dials.
