THIS is why I don't go to the gym. Ever.

Best to let others wonder if you're ignorant rather than speak and remove all doubt. What a pompus a$$.
First, the Speedmaster is an all time classic with a rich history.
Second, it's about the watch, not the brand.

People like that exist everywhere, I find it quite irritating as most would! Good of you to stay calm though. The old age saying goes imo...if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all.

I like Pete's advice though!

I will say this. When asked about my watch "is it a Rolex", I just say yes and move on. If I feel that the situation may be a stranger trying to size me up to rob me, and they say "is that a Rolex", I either ignore them or just say "no" or "what?" like three times...this usually frustrates them and they move on.

Not that your move warranted an uneducated comment but you could have just said "yes" and not given the details about the "1969 vintage". My opinion and kick me if you must but unless it's a friend or someone you have established a relationship as a WIS, no need to give details. It can lead to them feeling dumb at best, and a robber knowing they have a "rare" watch at worst.

And I know...nobody on here is afraid of anyone, we all will kick some a** if anyone takes our Rolex (or Omega), they better be prepared to meet my friend S&W etc...but why put yourself in that position.

I am just saying, in my experience, nothing good comes from a stranger asking me about my "high ticket" items, and me giving more information than needed.

-Pete

Some excellent responses here everyone.
He asked specifically if it was a Speedmaster, so I thought he was a fellow WIS and specified that its was a Speedy and a 69' model at that. I never thought of the bad things that might happen. Here in Florida I am prepared to deal with the less than friendly individuals out there. Thankfully nothing of the sort happened. I dont want that kind of trouble. But you never know..

This made me laugh sitting here. While I do like the Daytona, I dont believe its worth three or four Speedmasters in price. Though it is a beautiful watch. Were money no object I would probably have one just because. More likely I would buy more Speedmasters though.

There's a guy who belongs to the same organization as I do. Frankly, I've never met anyone in my life with as many stupid misconceptions as he has and on top of it he's a pompous ass.

He never gets tired of saying such things as Timex is better than Rolex or that Rolex is for people who are interested in nothing but prestige.

One day, I happened to have all my watches in the trunk of my car and when he made one of his ignorant proclamations about the superiority of Timex, I went to the car and retrieved my collection and showed him my seven Timex watches.

When I showed him my Invicta Pro Diver, he then questioned the authenticity of my Rolex Explorer.

This syndrome has nothing at all to do with watches and has everything to do with the pontificating ignoramuses who seem to have at least one representative in every crowd.

I've tried to tell Dick (yes, that's his real name) the kinds of things that make Rolex such a desirable watch and how it's not just good marketing or even prestige. If the quality wasn't there, regardless of the price of the watches, the name would mean nothing.

Next time however, I'm just going to tell him that he's just a knucklehead--courteously, of course.

We've seen the pictures of your vintage Speedmaster, it's a treasure and needs no explaination!!! I probably would have laughed and walked away. BTW, I'd be careful about wearing it to the gym. Gym lockers get robbed all the time.

Obviously. You are right on!

I don't know what people think they are gaining for saying dumb things like this. An Omega is an AWESOME watch and has nothing to envy any other watch.

I honestly don't care what he thinks as I don't know him. What I was disgusted about was his generally poor attitude and the fact that gives many Rolex owners a bad name. That is where my disgust stemmed from.

I purchased my Speedy for me. I love the watch, it's history behind it and the space program too. For me its one of my grails.
I dont care what others think at all. Truth be told very few people ever notice my watch, no matter what Im wearing.

The speedy pro is one of the most iconic watches in the world, every watch lover should own one. He is obviously just some clown who is more into brand names and false status than a true watch enthusiast.

Don't let it bother you, your speedy rocks.

If you truly value your Speedmaster why would you care?

However, in our materialistic world, monetary worth is all important. From that perspective that obnoxious gym fellow did have a point.

the fact is that you're right.

There are a lot of pompous Rolex owners out there and part of the reason is because Rolex's marketing and advertising is so pervasive and brain-washing that it invariably attracts a segment of the buying public who buy the watch but who are not a true WIS to appreciate the merits of the Speedmaster.

there's nothing you can do aside from telling people like him that he's an idiot of course. don't try to be polite or reason with them...you can't educate a moron.
