Nice choice babsiegirl.
The no refund I do not like.
What if one of our TS had one in stock for you?
I especially dont like the no refund rule because it is really one side, what if the watch takes 6 months to get? You would still be locked in.

Babsiegirl, I am not the most tech savvy person. I went to the Rolex website and did not see the configuration you want. Can you post a link?

It's probably reasonable for a DJ. Cautionary tale for a professional model:

Congrats and welcome!

Welcome to TRF! My old AD did not require any deposit. I recently tried a new AD and he required a 50% deposit and he said deposit is refundable if it was not delivered in a certain amount of time. I was comfortable with him, paid the deposit and the watch arrived.

Hope you get the DJ soon.

Babsiegirl,

As mentioned previously, different AD’s are likely to have individual conditions regarding payment options. Back in ‘14 I ordered my 116523 Daytona from my AD and gave him my configuration over the phone while I was on vacation. I asked him if he wanted a deposit and he said he didn’t need one as he trusted me. It’s a small family run business and I had a relationship with them though this was my first major buy from them. Your situation seems like it should be fine if this business you are dealing with has a good reputation and appears trustworthy from word of mouth etc.

Congrats on the incoming watch!

For my traded Sky D I put down 50%. I can see a shop requiring 100% if it's a watch that is more of niche watch!!!

I would never pay upfront for any luxury goods.

Not in the business of becoming a creditor to an AD over a mass produced watch

Yes...I'm also a "VIP" and spend about $100K-$150K per year with a particular chain (watches+jewelry). To bring in my President they wanted it paid-in-full upfront. Then it showed up 2 dates later.

They never made me pay upfront for anything other than the Day-Date. Sky Dweller no problem. Pepsi and CHNR no problem. Submariner and D-Blue no issue. None of my wife's watches had any issue either. Only the DD.

Strange. Ohhh well.

I'm more accustomed to a 50% deposit but what they're asking isn't out of the question.

The first purchase I made at my AD for the SD43 , I had to give 25%. Now I don’t anymore I have bought a few other watches since and they know I am good for it.

I've never placed a deposit with my AD and have received a 116500ln, 5711, and 5167a. Anything more than a 1k deposit worse case if required is just a free loan to the AD they can make money off and if they go out of business your shit out of luck.

Yea see I would have told the AD if they wanted full payment up front she would have to commit to a specific time frame. If the watch doesn’t show up in 90 days a full refund is due you. That’s the only way I would do a full pre pay.

My AD requires full payment up front for special orders. I’ve done that a few times. Paid in full and received the watch a few weeks or months later. In one instance it took too long so I canceled the order and got my money back.

I just talked to my AD, who is also the manager of the jewelry store. She’s expecting my watch in another couple of weeks. She also stated that they’re not unreasonable and would offer a refund if need be. Thanks for your response.

Did you go to Moretti's on the north side of SA? They are pretty top notch as far as ADs go. That's why they also get to carry Patek.

No, I’ve never been to Moretti’s. I did call and ask if they had the watch I wanted, but they didn’t have it either. I went with LeeMichaels because I’ve done business with them and I know the manager.

No requirement to pay a deposit when asking for a watch at my AD in the UK, they are more than happy to get a watch in, when it arrives you are expected to visit the AD within a few days to view the watch, if you want the watch then you either pay there and then or you put a holding deposit (usually 20%) whilst you get finance in place (move funds, up credit limit, stand on street corner begging, what ever you need to do), my AD has said that they will hold for 3 months if not fully purchased at this point your deposit is refunded and the watch goes to next on list or into the display case.

My AD was even prepared to let me split the 20% over 2 months to hold a watch as I had advised that I wouldn't be ready to buy until the New Year. I declined as I prefer to have the funds in place before I start my watch hunt.
