Grand Seiko - pricing outside US vs Rolex

Numerous discussions citing superior fit and finish for the price thus value of Grand Seiko watches.

Also discussions regarding brand perception in US and how that impacts demand here.

Question, how does the pricing for gs vs rolex compare in other countries where brand perception is not an issue?

If I buy in Japan, where they are ok with branding and maybe have a better understand of just how favorably gs compares to rolex does the price reflect that or is delta the same?

The world is flat now and, barring some currency fluctuations, prices aren't all that different around the world imho. I got a smoking deal on a GS Spring Drive from a Japanese seller earlier this year.

Although even a "smoking deal" on a used GS without papers is well above half of msrp. Resale is basically on par with any brand outside Rolex and Patek...I'd say their brand is doing just fine.

i think overall the mrsp are below those of rolex but if talking about resale value then it really depends on the model itself.

My experience in the US is you can start negotiation at 20% off MSRP with ADs (excluding the NYC boutique). This brings BNIB pricing in line with anywhere else, even accounting for currency variance, as others have mentioned.

My Rolex GMT cost nearly twice that as my GS GMT. If I sold both I would lose more money selling my BLNR.

Buying GS in Asia is the way to go if you're ever out there, not only is the list price lower than USA or EU but I had no trouble getting 33% off retail list price on one of the most sought after limited editions this year.

I got a quote from a Japanese vendor and US vendor. The US vendor's price was 8% below that of the Japanese vendor (excluding potential import taxes). I suppose if I flew to Japan maybe I could get a better deal. Also, by buying in the US I got a 3 year warranty vs. the 1 year international warranty.

Thanks for the replies. My thinking here is if price is the same internationally then supposed brand prejudice in us is probably not the case. And looking forward given the value, probably will be paying a lot more proportionally in the future for grand Seiko.

I will find out after the first of the year first hand. Been looking at a GS snowflake. In no rush and have a friend that is moving to Tokyo in January.

We are heading to Germany/Switzerland/France in March to see family and attend a small watch show in Basel. Am intending to check there also.
