Flip 114060 for 116610? Am I crazy?
I currently own a 114060 and I love the clean dial but I'm starting to miss having a date function. I'm toying around the idea of flipping it and getting the 116610 but I'm not sure how I feel about the cyclops or If I would eventually get sick of it. I also cant tell if its my ADD kicking in and just looking to get something "New". What would you do?

Give yourself two weeks to a month to think about it carefully. If you really need the date function, get the 116610. Since you say you love the dial, it's really a case of whether the date function or the clean dial is more important to you.

Equal except for date.
If you need a date do it. For me, I like the simple no date look....if only it had lugholes:)

You're pursuing function over form, which is ok, but for me, the date is everywhere, not necessary on the dial of my watch.

Gotta have the date function on my watches so its a no brainer for me. As for the Cyclops I like it but if you don't you can always have it removed and replaced with a non Cyclops crystal

Same watch except for the date complication. The differeence in MSRP between them is $1,000. If you switch, you may take a bigger hit than that on a flip, depending on what you spent for the 114060. Give it a few weeks and see how you feel then. If you really need a date function, then it's a no-brainer. Remember, what you think you need right now may be something you can do without later on.

You cannot go wrong with either. I chose the 114060 for its simplicity, symmetry, and the fact that the original Sub did not have a date function.

I love the 114060 as part of a collection, but if I had to choose a single watch to wear every day, it would be the 116610LN. I'm one of those people that needs at least one watch with a date complication.
You really can't go wrong either way though |

Looks wise, the 114060 is flawless.
If you need the date, then make the flip. I wouldn't. |

Flip for the date dear boy.
I would never say this for vintage, but for the ceramic Subs, the date cyclops actually suprisingly works with the supersize case design. Whereas previously the cyclops always (for me) felt too big in proportion with the regular cases, on the new cases it adds a killer 'dive machine' vibe from a design perspective. I made the mistake of selling mine and thought of a non-date, but just like going back to the old girlfriend that you knew you should have stuck with (ahem, we've all been there!!) I relented and went back. Needless to say I now appreciate what I once gave away!! :-) |

I have been going back and forth the last couple days and its a really tough decision. I was considering that I should just be patient and buy another watch with the date on it but I really dont know when that will be. It could be a very long time till I can afford another watch at this price point. So getting something like the date may not be a bad idea if it could be the only watch I own for quite awhile.

After having a date (DJ) for decades, 114060 is a minor adjustment. I check my calendar in the am and I'm all set for the day. The other advantage, you hardly have to unscrew the crown anymore with 114060 as this thing is so accurate (I keep home time when traveling)

My first was a 14060, 20 years ago. Few years later, I bought a 16610, problem solved. Still have both!

I just got the 114060. I also own a 16610. Not quite your predicament but close enough. I for me, getting the 114060 was enough of an upgrade on a lot of fronts. I wouldn't recommend getting both in your case. I am going to be biased obviously but I find the 116610 a little crowded. I think the 114060 is more "pure." It's ancestor was the original Submariner even if the date seems to be more popular now. If you really need the date then I'd recommend saving and getting something else like a Datejust II or Explorer II.

Or yeah, didn't even think of it. Get the 116610LV if you're dead set on a Sub.

I have the 116610LN and recently bought a Panerai without date. I didn't realize how much I rely on the date on my watch until getting a watch without the date function. It isn't much of an issue for a weekend watch or something other than a daily wearer, but if you are like me, I need a date for a daily wearer.

I wouldn't do it, but if you prefer the sub date, it's far from being crazy!

I guess if you need the date then go for it. I want an 114060 and it is quite a popular watch even among purist but I do feel to a certain extent it can be difficult to be an only watch and fits perfectly in a collection.
Some people can live without the date, I couldn't but today when I had to set the date on my Deepsea I thought of how convenient it must be to just worry about setting the time. |
