16750 help

I've heard there are 16750 with matte dials with gold surrounded markers- has anyone heard of that? Even with the older gloss dials, I'm having trouble really seeing high gloss--- everything looks matte to me, maybe i just haven't seen a good gloss version. This is a hi-res picture so the actual watch looks better.

That looks pretty glossy to me, but it can be more obvious with oblique illumination.

They are either matte OR gloss w/ white gold surrounds. That said, I’ve seen some lose their gloss from environmental damage (moisture).

16750 help

Never heard of gold applied markers on a matte dial before. Yes early 16750’s had matte dials and later transitioned to glossy dials with raised gold markers (similarly the 5513 Submariner transitioned to glossy dials around the same time but the reference didn’t change since only the dial changed). Matte dials are rarer since many were exchanged for gloss dials during a service. The photo you posted is a glossy dial.

Thank you-- it's a 7.1m serial so it was probably born with a matte dial and service dialed somewhere in the nineties. It was recently serviced but the dial and hands were left.

It’s a soft watch. I would avoid it unless an extremely good buy.

They are asking $7400... IDK in this market how that stacks up everything has gone up so much.

The watch head and bracelet are in below average condition along with the dial and insert not being correct.

ok thanks for the help.

What makes the insert wrong on this-- a later service insert? The dial didn't really bother me but the bracelet is bad and needs links anyways so that all adds up.

I've seen quite a few choices in the 10k-12k range that look pretty nice.

Insert is later version.

Expect to pay $10,000 plus for an excellent, correct glossy dial 16750 and
$15,000 or more for an excellent, correct 16750 matte dial 16750.

It's amazing that a "Service Dial" which should indicate that the watch has been taken care of "better" is worth less than an original which one has no idea of the service over the years if at all.

Not really. A service or replacement engine in a vintage Shelby GT500 or hemi Road Runner substantially affects the value. It's that way with most collectibles - originality and condition is what drives the prices on collectibles.

Got it, I think I'm starting to understand this. Either way a new watch would still be double this so there's some value to an older serviced watch-- or at least at the moment with short supply.

The short supply really props up the vintage market
