Get the two most iconic Rolex models. The SS black Sub and the two tone DJ 36/41. Have enough left over for a nice Tudor or Omega.

Love it!!

I'd probably go for a TT DJ, rose gold with chocolate dial, a Sub & have a bunch left over, haha.

And with your leftover you can get a nice JLC reverso / dress watch or maybe a grand seiko dress watch

And with the leftover you can also buy an Apple Watch

With 40k you can get your whole collection !

Or ONE day date or ONE PM Daytona on oysterflex …

Have you considered the Explorer 1 models in both 36mm and 40mm sizes? They're classic pieces and might fit well within your budget.

If you're going Grey go with the best value in vintage which right now is like 90's and 2000's era stuff.

I'd be looking at precious metal as well.

I would start the search with what you like, rather than what the budget is.
So many different options at the $40k mark.

Do you want 1 Rolex or 2/3 Rolexes ? I can then give my opinion.

Basically what I have in my collection. Submariner, DJ41 Blue Jubilee Fluted. Save the rest. Perhaps you could add a Snoopy or something as well.

Why buy on the second hand market.. are you after a hyped/popular watch you did not have any luck getting at the AD?

$40k budget, yeah big money to spend and just buy what you like and not the opinions of other people.

Have a Pepsi. Trading in Sea Dweller and Milgauss Z Blue plus cash.

I would avoid the grey market; that being said, 40K could get you a decent Day Date from the AD (if you are patient).

I'd prioritize model over budget – most of the iconic ones can be had for half that.

If you're set on budget and going grey, look into the PM Daytonas. Ironically Day Dates are less on the secondary.

I'd personally go for the current 36mm WG or Platinum DD,

I'd go for 3 in a roundabout way, which also happen to probably be my 3 favorites.

Sub and Daytona steel on the grey market (would have to do black dial Daytona to fit budget, fine with me) for $40k.

Then save some more money and get the DJ through an AD which shouldn't be too hard to do. Done.

I'd eye a PM OF Daytona.

But if I was being honest, I'd go with a rose gold Overseas with blue or silver dial. Then you have the best of both worlds with full PM bracelet and mix/match rubber straps.

You're set with a pretty epic 2-piece collection.

A PM Daytona Oysterflex 1265 series if possible. It will retain its value and desirability better than any one watch. Or you can go for two: the SS Pepsi GMT II and a SS Sub (Date or No Date)
