SubC dilemma: to trade for PO 8500 or not??

Guys,

BIG dilemma. Im getting married this summer and can only afford one watch for now... I really like the new omega PO 8500 on bracelet and rubber. Done a lot of research and it would be a good pickup. However my random serial subc I picked up at the end of the year is my baby. I'm such a sub head. Problem is, I could get cash in a trade for the PO and put it toward some much needed expenses... Should I trade or keep the sub and hold out for the PO later on, sucking up the expenses, OR trade and re-buy the sub again lol. Thanks again, I hope to get some much needed advice. Cheers.

You will regret it if you trade. Do not do it. Look but dont touch/trade.

That's a tough one. I actually considered it after trying a PO on. The actual fit and finish is simply amazing. The 8500 is a remarkable movement. IMO its just as good as the SubC but I couldn't trade my Sub for it. My long term plans include a PO in the distant future for sure. Maybe going to a LVc and a PO and selling the black SubC in a few years. The PO seems to be holding its value very well and like the Sub I don't see it getting any cheaper. It's really up to you but I don't think you will get enough money in that trade to justify it. I mean if you could get $1500 then I might say do it but most of the ones I've seen selling were pretty expensive.

Everyone on this forum loves Rolex(s)...
but if you NEED the money, sell the SubC and buy the PO(awesome watch) ..
You can pocket over 3K.

Personally, I want to be as debt free as possible.

Good Luck

I have owned and sold both. They are both great watches but I realized that I missed the Sub more. 8500 PO is freaking awesome though. You cannot go wrong with either. If you need the money, do it.

So as natural progression would have it.. 42mm or 45.5? I've got 7" wrist. That's what I'm worried ab... That I'll really miss the sub. I've loved everything behind the subs history but really could deal w the cash ;) thx for your input so far!

if you have a flat 7" wrist you can pull off the 46 but make sure to try it on first because of the thickness. the thickness makes them appear smaller than you would think just going by the case circumference.

The Planet Ocean is that good, I don't think you'll miss the Sub - in my opinion, it's the best luxury diver's watch on the market. The price point makes it an even better deal. If you sell the Sub privately, you should get most of your money back. As for 42mm vs. 45.5mm, I have the same dilemma myself - I'm swaying towards the 45.5mm right now

If you really need the cash, sell the Sub and skip getting the Omega as well. It is more important to stay as liquid as possible for your big event, especially as there expenses that you cannot forsee.

If you truly adore the Sub and that is the watch you want to wear on your wedding and keep for the rest of your life, talk it through with your wife to be and discuss how you feel.

I would get the Omega personally. Way better looking, better proportions and bezel with a new promising movement this is the watch that will bump Omega up a notch.

Go for the Omega, you won't be disappointed.

I'd love to see the 8500 blue liquid metal bezel and blue dial on SS in 42mm. That would be a great watch for me and present a tough choice with the Hulk.

As far as making a trade from SubC to PO to free up some money, I would only do it if I really preferred the PO. In the end, either way, this is serious money, so, go with what you really want and if you need the cash now, consider selling the Sub and promising yourself you'll get another when the time is right. The SubC isn't going anywhere and, for me, there isn't much point in having both (too many other watches out there).

Good luck with the choice.

The 8500 PO's are indeed very nice, but to say they're holding their value anywhere near as well as a Sub isn't true.

I'm seeing lnib 8500's going now in the mid 4's, list is I think 6200, that's close to 30%, compare to lnib Sub C's, list is 8k, lnib is 6.8 to 7k, that's only 12-13%. I think now that the 8500's are becoming readily available, we'll once again see that, granted, the new PO is a great watch, and a bargain, but, it's not going to have Rolex resale value. Maybe it should, but the signs point to it being a, fairly typical for Omega, nicely discounted watch. Which really just makes it an even better buy. :)

If I didn't have a Sub C, I'd strongly consider an 8500 in the mid 4's. Omega isn't alone, look at the new IWC Aquatimer 2000m, I know 2 AD's, and I didn't look that hard, that'll discount them 30% too, plus, no tax if out of state. Meaning, you can get one for $3220, brand new from the AD! That's a pretty good buy too. (on rubber).

You can get a NEW 8500 from an AD for less then $4300 delivered (less customs) at today's exchange rate.
I paid ~4400 total (was unlucky with customs for $170ish)

Omega fan, as well as Rolex. However, I would keep the sub. Omegas, in my limited experience, are easier to pick up at a better price later than a Rolex.

do what makes you happy. i would do it.

besides i think the PO is going to go price increase with all that demand. omega PO will become a rolex sub in about 3-5 years.

It may seem that you need to do this right now but down the track it will nag you as a bad decision IMO.

When you look back at your wedding pics later on in life, I think you"ll kick yourself when you see the PO on your wrist and think 'Man I was such a sucker for selling my Rolex, I said I'd have another but then the kids came along and..."

Keep the Sub, it's a fantastic watch and will look great on the wedding photo's. For me the PO's have got too thick, I had a Brteitling but it had to go as kept on hitting the door frames etc

All is just my opinion, you must do what YOU believe will be better in the long term

Well there are a few replies here that are way to wrapped up on the name on the dial than the watch itself.

I had a Sub C and sold it, no regrets. It you want flash, the new Sub C J, J is for jewelery, is the way to go. If you want the best diver on the market, get the 8500 PO. The 8500 PO is a superior watch and you have the option of switching from rubber to the bracelet, that is fantastic, you will also have money back in your pocket.

im not biased about the brand or the value it will retain.

point on point omega has a better diver than rolex submariner.

if you like plain old looks go rolex

but if you like modern yet still classic go omega

i have gone through this agonizing decision before.

but thankfully i already have the gmt master

Just to clear something up, I wore my Omega Saemaster at my wedding, I've still got it and wouldn't sell it. However I don't like the new PO's, well I say that, I think they look smashing from certain angles but they are just too thick, the older SM with the 8500 movement was great, but the new one is too deep, bit like a deep-sea.

Anyway your decision an just remember that because of the 'name on the dial' it will always be worth money wherever you go in the world. If you still want a PO, buy secondhand as they do drop quite quickly in price.

If you need the cash flip the C for the 8500. But I wouldn't pay more then 4400$ for a new 8500. Good luck on your decision.
