now looking at ceramic daytona or pepsi to order next (prob next week).

curious to know whether some on here would think this is the wrong way to go about building a collection.
i bet some people would say part of the enjoyment is taking your time and building slowly.

i just hate wanting something and thinking/researching about it therefore taking my time away from more important things.
so my philosophy is that if i can afford it, then buy it and get on with something more constructive

I tend to look for iconic watches with a history such as Datejust II 116334

On a number of occasions, Roger Federer has spoken about its personal significance, because it was the timepiece he was wearing in 2009, after he defeated Andy Roddick, lifted the Wimbledon trophy and broke Pete Sampras’ all-time Grand Slam record.

It is a stainless steel model, with a silver dial and blue Arabic numerals, making it one of the most understated watches in his collection and mine too!

For me, this doesn’t represent watch collecting or being WIS - it’s just a guy with money flaunting wealth, which is clear given the watches being bought all at once being the most hype steels Rolex - rather than any personality coming through. It’s almost as if it’s someone who has seen a list of the most in demand watches and just wanted to get them all at once to say he’s got them, rather than really knowing anything about them or even why they like them

Ultimately it’s your money and unless the bubble bursts you’re unlikely to lose much, but where is the enjoyment of getting three new watches in one week, you hardly have time to get to know them before the next one comes along.

Is there anything wrong with it, no. But it doesn’t interest me or impress me as a collection.

It sounds like you're insecure. Focus more on who you are, than buying new watches. Passion comes and goes, self-awareness is forever.

Your just a sucker that got pulled into the hype.

Buy what you really like not what Instagram tells you to buy. Following along with the crowd like a sheep has no individuality at all.

If you have the money, I would do it with an AD, that way you’ll get the watches at MSRP

IMO, that’s not a collection, it’s a buying spree.

Nothing wrong at all with building a collection fast. I would suggest building a relationship with your AD instead. For the grey premium you paid, you could’ve “bundled” a SS model with something they want to unload. You still would come ahead and build a relationship

DoctorA has a good point with the relationship. No matter how much money you have, it's hard to get some models from the AD.

well its a buying spree to go into my collection.

theres a reason i got the original batman and hulk and not the pepsi (yet).
discontinuation has a large part to play in all this.

sorry but this type of watch snobbery is so pathetic

what does "knowing a watch" consist of?
within 30 mins i can read everything there is to know about a watch and its history online.

my mate owns one so i've tried it on and so i certainly know "why i like it".

its as if your definition of knowing a watch is putting an image as your wallpaper for 12 months whilst popping into ADs asking to be put on a waiting list and frequenting the rolex website to read the same description over and over.

not my cup of tea mate

DavidSW and consorts should just sell the whole lot as a Rolex FOMO starter set - Hulk, BLNR, Pepsi, Daytona white and black and Sky blue, in a nice gift box. One click, done. Maybe offer upgrade options with an AP Jumbo and a Nautilus.

Somehow the Hulk wasn't amazing for the first half decade, when they were sitting in AD's windows collecting dust.

Sounds like you have all the answers to your questions.

Is it “bad”? Only if you think you could be more happy with a different approach to acquisition. Sounds like maybe you don’t think that —good for you.

I will say that in my experience a large portion of the enjoyment of this hobby comes from deliberating over potential purchases and the construction of a thoughtful collection. But you do you.

Knock yourself out but why come looking for some kind of affirmation if you have all the answers?

Not snobbery at all, but you are seeing the same comments over and again, it’s just buying up stuff because you can, not collecting. As someone else said, the Hulk sat in display cases for years, and for all the people who need to have them it's just a bit strange that they didn't feel the same way before they were so hyped

Keep buying your trinkets, knock yourself out

when the hulk arrives, the top line of my case will be filled so will make for a nicer pic.

not sure why some would think im making this up (not you Sleepy996). the batman is the only watch i currently have in my possession that's a bit expensive. next is the OP that cost me around £5k which isnt a big deal.

maybe if i had said i have RM35-02, nautilus, 116519, plat day date then i could understand a bit of skepticism

not really
batman and hulk i dont regret. the longer i leave it the more ill pay so happy i jumped on them within a few days of each other.

pepsi jubilee will be around for years so open to the idea of calming down a bit with my purchases. interesting to see peoples opinions. isnt that the whole point of a forum?

It cools down when the bug is gone. And you have a bunch of steel Rolex you may not like at the time. But you can easily sell them, which is a good thing.
So I think it is a good decision as long as you can afford them. Congratz!

I’ve been collecting watches for 15+ years now. I enjoy the hunt for a new watch. There are so many watches I love but wouldn’t buy. I don’t understand the OP, owning 3+ of the same brand right away? There are many fish in the sea, Rolex is nice brand but you need to explore my friend. Your sight is too narrow. Just my opinion.
