You know, I am feeling philosophical today, maybe it’s the pain meds but I have learned something in my middle age. I used to be pretty... well... a conceited SOB. Surprising for a former Fighter Pilot isn’t it? When someone told me what they did for a living, if it was blue collar, or not... “prestigious” I would scoff. What an A hole I was. Now things have really changed for me. I have a senior management-well paying position but have been unhappy with my job for close to three years. Now take my step brother. He works the swing shift in factory. He is in a room all buy himself. He has contact with his co-workers during breaks but is usually alone. He has been there 20 years and numerous times been offered promotions but always turns them down. He is happy doing what he is doing. You know what? GOD bless him. WHATEVER your chosen profession, I don’t care if it’s a garbage collector, if you are happy, the best garbage collector you can possibly be then I salute you sir/mam. I guess I’m getting mellow in my old age.

I spent a long time on Wall Street, retired, and went back to work at FedEx. Started as a part time package handler and now I'm an Ops Admin.

If you’re unhappy with your job, change jobs. Unless you’ve got some golden handcuffs.

That’s a gig that will be really good for the foreseeable future! Data centers are the new Walmart.

My brother backed off. I stepped forward. The business had 3 employees at the time and was in endless debt.

16 years later I now have over 30 employees and I was listed on Inc 5000’s list of fastest growing companies.

Over the last 16 years I’ve paid my father a nice salary, and then some. I’ve paid off what he spent on college, and likely my first 18 years as well.

I remember the days when I picked up toilet paper one week, and paper towels the next because I couldn’t afford both in one trip to the supermarket.

My first shop was in a swamp. No heat in winter. No ac in summer. No doors on the bathrooms. Destroyed in hurricane Irene and then again in Sandy.

No generational family money here.
Well done.

My parents instilled good values in me but could afford little else. I’m grateful for the supportive home environment and example they set for me. I paid my own way through school and put in 35 years at a large multinational American corporation where I progressed to director level of manufacturing operations.

Made a lot of money in my twenties racing bikes. Later became a psychotherapist, now retired, but still own the business and medical office. Now, I am a house husband that gets the kids ready for school and watches all their games and practices. Spend at least eight weeks a year at our Florida home that I hope to retire to when the kids are on their own. They may never leave as they love to accompany my wife and I on vacations.

Anyone have suggestions as to good passive income streams they rely on while still holding their regular jobs?

Real estate holdings would probably be your best bet. If you're a landlord & have a property management company take care of the day-to-day, you just collect a check every month. That's at least how I view it. Or have a mutual fund & siphon off the dividends, but that'd have to be a hefty fund.

A rental property is probably the least demanding source of passive income i've experienced.

Sales Rep for a multi-national steel product provider. I specifically sell line-pipe for the oil and gas industry. Have been in the patch for 23 years. Some good times, some bad.
