5811G vs. 5990/1A vs. 5990/1R

Doing a fun poll - which one would you get (if you had the option at MSRP) between the highly coveted 5811G, 5990/1A or the 5990/1R, and why.

The 5811 is everything great about the 5711 plus some. Absolute classic IMO. I know people love the 5990 but to me it’s too big, like an offshore. Not my jam.

5811G all day every day. Its strange for me to say this but its severely under-rated. Many think its just a gold 5711 but its a totally different beast. The case is 2 piece, the dial is VERY blue gradation, its a true beauty. The gold adds a slight bit of heft but not like heavy since the watch is very svelte to begin with. And the silky bracelet with the extentions. Real classic.

I went with 5990r. Not that I had an option to choose between the three. Want them all.

I voted 5811/1G but to me it remains a money grab vs 5711/1A. I prefer A over G when it comes to a watch worn every day including sports (think dent resistance), feel that 5711 was plenty large (admittedly, the difference is small), and like the under-the-radar grey blue (with under-the-radar and can-do-all the key selling points pre hype).

Yeah the 5811G is definitely a perfect watch, but I do love the complications of the 5990 since to me they are fun and usable...
1. Dual time - definitely usable since I travel for work regularly
2. Date - useful, while a bit small, but still useful,
3. Chrono - fun, not super practical in general, but fun.

I'm also impressed that the R has so many votes; but not surprised since it's such a gorgeous watch!

Voted 5811G. Just saw one sell online for 173K. I love the watch and being able to wear one forever at retail would be a great feeling.

I took delivery of 5811 yesterday from AD. Wonderful piece. Will share rotation with 5712/1A and 5740. I like the extra heft from WG but still remarkable comfortable given the height. Very excited to have added

I have to admit, the 5990r is a big, loud, and obviously gorgeous watch!

Also, since posting this I've had a chance to see all three (at random times) IRL... Here are my thoughts....

1. 5811G - I'd say the 5811G is the most subtle and classic, and I love the extra weight of the WG vs. steel. I've worn the 5711 for a few months and it feels super light, so the 5811 is definitely noticeable on the wrist. The new clasp is super cool, and the micro adjust is great (finally Patek added it :)). Overall, I think this one wins for me due to it's simple beauty and I still consider it the "perfect" Nautilus.

2. 5990R - this one is the most loud with the rose gold and blue dial, and almost immediately commands attention to your wrist. The rose gold with blue dial is a beautiful combination and Patek nailed it perfectly! Especially in the sun, the watch is just absolute baller. You can't say "no" to this watch - and for those few lucky ones that get a chance to own one - congrats!

3. The 5990A is somewhere in between - it's notably bigger than the 5811G and the new blue dial is a nicer than the grey one imho. Wears much lighter compared to the R (obviously... ha ha...).

5990/1R is an absolute beauty. The electric blue dial with the RG case is really a match made in heaven. Rolex tried to do the same combination with the SkyD and that looks off.

5811/1G is perhaps the quintessential Nautilus.

All three choices are amazing but my pick would be 5990/1R > 5811/1G > 5990/1A due to preference for PM. 5980/1R is also nice but often overlooked compared to the 5990/1R.

Stunning! One Patek AD mentioned it's harder to get the 5990R than a 5811G, and 5811G has been the ultimate Nautilus on the demand list.

The 5811 is a beautiful watch and its weight adds to the attraction. As above it does, at first sight and given Mr Stern’s comments, appear to be a money grab but the two piece design in white gold combined with Mr Stern’s statement that he intends to protect the price by limiting production - albeit according to how he feels - makes it a good investment piece.

I think this is right... He's honest about it and understands the 5711 / 5811 desirability and his approach feels appropriate.

FWIW, while the price is higher, the watch itself is absolute perfection! I can't say enough how beautiful, elegant, and simply perfect the 5811G feels on the wrist. I think most people who are saying it's hype, not worth it or something along those lines, have never actually seen one IRL. Once you see it, feel it, put in on your wrist, you will fall in love with it.

You nailed it! I never bonded with the 5711 series but the 5811? Man this thing is just pure class. I honestly think its "underrated" in the sense that people think its just a white gold 5711 and its just not the case.
