Interesting story....I stopped by my local AD yesterday to chat about the Basel World releases. They had a Hulk sitting in the case. I could have bought it, sold it in a day and made a few bucks. But that's not what I do. I buy them to wear and flip them if I don't like them.

A couple minutes later a guy walked in, made a bee line for the Hulk, asked to see it, put it on and said "I'll take it." Decision made in under 10 seconds. Point is he looked thrilled to find it and I hope he enjoys the heck out of it. That's what it's all about.

Of all the things Rolex does well the thing they do the best is making decisions that
greatly reward those who buy and hold.

Bought/buy all my watches with intentions to keep but I do run into a few that I simply don’t wear or enjoy anymore. Also, I keep my collection small (3-4 pieces) and I’m not made out of money, I tend to work some magic with trades. Win or lose, value doesn’t matter to me. When I buy it, it’s on the wrist.

So far with Rolex, the two I’ve bought I’m keeping for a long, long while.

I buy watches to keep and wear .... eventually I will go down to one watch only, my wife and daughter get first dibs on what they want, after that it would be nice not to take a bath when I sell whats left, but for the most part, I'm not concerning myself with stressing about what may or may not be in a decade or 2.

Some will do this of course, but it is a minority’s. Bear in mind that Rolex sells c.800k watches per year.

One thing that does absolutely happen, is that tastes change and collections mature.

See the attached picture which shows my collection history, and you will see that a good few have come and gone, either because I’ve chosen badly, my tastes have changed, something new has come out that I prefer, or because I’ve been able to afford to upgrade my collection.

And at one point I sold a few because I was extending the house and wanted the cash.

I’ve made money overall, but that has never been my intention when buying a watch.

I buy to keep, Rolex retention value is great but irrelevant to me since I don’t flip or plan on reselling to make a profit.

I'll never sell mine. I've still got all of the watches I've ever owned apart from a Panerai that was incredibly unreliable. I've kept and still love an old Tag Heuer that I bought back in the early 90s that's the same model Senna used to wear. A service probably costs more than the watch is worth nowadays. It doesn't matter.
I was disappointed when the market changed and the SS shortages started happening, I've seen a few of my hobbies over the years explode in popularity and have an influx of 'experts' that thought everything started six months ago, pushed up prices and made it harder for the regular Joe to enjoy the hobby. Bottles of single malt whisky that I bought (and thoroughly enjoyed drinking) for less than £20 in the past are now changing hands for 4 figures. Shame.

I do not buy to flip. I also can't own every single watch at once so keeping a watch for a year and moving it on is pretty much how a lot of my watches end up working out. Both hot watches and non hot watches... and its a money pit.

Im so net negative at this point if i was doing it for money i would quit

I have three sons. I would love to create a legacy with a lovely watch for each of them brand new with the papers in my name. Its impossible to generate a relationship with an AD even though i have already purchased two rolex watches already for myself and my wife. They can keep the papers till I snuff it as far as I am concerned. That's my ultimate goal anyway....

I buy to wear but I do not keep most watches forever. I like variety in style and brand but have no interest in accumulating dozens of watches.

Knowing that in somewhere between 1 and 10 years I will sell to make room for something new, I try to buy smart. Brands that depreciate I try to only buy used, I generally won't pay over retail for anything even a hot Rolex. So no, I am not ever buying a watch hoping to make money but value retention or reasonable depreciation does matter to me. I am the same way with cars. I don't keep them forever and see no point in never selling one. I'd have 40 vehicles in the driveway.

Buy to keep. Although i have only bought them to wear and use. Don't tend to change them around very much as in swapping out dailies.

SS Sub has been stored away probably 11 years now as i wear my SS SD as my daily. That however is about to change.

Swap it out for my DJ TT when i am going out a bit smarter.

Mine are bought to keep; even the ones I let go of!!! I never ever planned on flipping; that is until the collection got unwieldy. At least the Daytona Platinum seems to be a keeper!!!

Would never go thru the hassle of trying to make a quick buck flipping a watch. That is not how I make a living and not worth the time.

I buy the watches to keep but many times I have gotten disappointed with the watch for one reason or the other and sold it. I also have no problem to sell if the watch got obsolete in my collection due to something better replacing it.

In these times it is very hard to get much time with the watches before buying. Now I know my Rolex preferences and fit (apart from jubilee) so those I can buy without trying much.. but will never buy another brand unseen again (except perhaps Nautilius ;) because that leads to me flipping 50% of the times, but with a loss normally.

I’m a big fan of trade . This way both get something they may want an possibly of losing isn’t as great as long as the deal is right meaning maybe a few buck up or down . I try to trade watches that hold equal value so if u had to ditch you’ll get your money back at the least

I have probably bought and sold 50-75 Rolex watches over 25 plus years and most were suppose to be in the collection today. I have four currently and will sell/trade any watch I won when I want for another watch I want. No issues other than values and wear.

In todays climate I would say 90% buy to flip and 10% actually buy for the hobby.

When the tide turns its going to be ugly.

My only interest is in the 116610LV and I hope that if the day presents itself then it will be the only watch I have. No interest in waiting so long and longing for a watch then to flip it. That is soulless

Something about it just strikes me as an immaculate piece.

I've never bought a watch thinking that I'd sell it in future, or to make money on it. I buy what my heart desires!

Having said that, value retention is important for me, so I tend to buy pre-owned...which in today's Rolex world, apparently means paying over MSRP. I'm one of the lucky ones that got in before the craziness of the last 2 years, I guess.

Short answer - would I buy a Rolex just to flip? Nope.

I keep them to wear them, though I recently 'moved' a couple of vintage that were getting a 'little too old' for me!
