Changes to the Calatrava Line?
I had heard from a couple of sources that some models of the Calatrava were to be discontinued this year. I know Basel added Ref 5212, but has anything been dropped from the line? Looking at the PP website I don't see the 5119J anymore. I thought it was on the pre-Basel, but maybe it was discontinued earlier. Any more definitive information would be appreciated.
Thanks, Bill |

The 5116 was discontinued last year and the 5119 was just discontinued with no replacements. I too was wondering why this was the case, as the 5119/5116 was the current quintessential Calatrava, in my opinion, and what I always picture when I think of Patek, along with their perpetual calendar chronographs. I also see a fair number of 5119s on the wrists of various politicians, businessmen, and academics, so I have to believe it's among their best sellers, but perhaps not. I was predicting Patek would release a new handwind movement to replace the 215, which, while lovely, is quite small by today's standards, but they did not. I wonder if they have a new handwind sub seconds movement in the works and will release new models for 2020. I guess the 5196 now occupies the spot as the dressiest Patek and while it's certainly a nice watch, I'll personally miss the lovely hobnail bezel, the Roman numerals, the leaf hands, and the display back. I'm glad to have mine.

Interesting to note that several Calatrava references are no longer listed on the Patek website, including 5296, 5153, 5119 and a few others.

If they still keep the Ellipse, Calatrava is here to stay! No worry

Not unlikely. Times have changed and people dress more casual. As a result few people buy pure dress watch nowadays. Minimum dress watches with some complication.

I wore my 5116R yesterday, I just love the 5116 and 5119. They could really use a bigger movement than the 215PS (21.9mm).
Hopefully Patek is working on a larger diameter thin manual movement similar to the 4400 from Vacheron (28.60mm). I just noticed the VC Patrimony Platinum MSRP is south of $30k. I think that's a strong competitor in this space, especially if bought with a discount. |
