5960.. meh at retail?

Shopping for a milestone birthday later this year. Like everyone would prefer a nautilus but of course that’s impossible.

Saw this pretty sweet flyback chrono at the AD. Strap is kinda weird - like a brushed leather, dark blue. What’s the story on these models - going to lose a lot of value out the door? Also 10% sales tax so there’s that consideration.

Cross shopping day dates, reverso, maybe a PM Daytona if I can get ahold of one. What would you get around 50k?

Around $50,000 you have a lot of options. I think a few used Patek chronos fall into that range, the patek worldtimer does too, and then Lange 1815 chrono or even a used dato.

I would definitely go used because most watches lose value new if that's something you're concerned with.

It's a nice watch, but you can pay below retail. I certainly won't pay full pop for it.

Years ago i owned the 5960P grey dial version. Loved it! It was a fantastic watch with loads of useful complications.

I’d highly recommend it.... perhaps pick up a great preowned piece?

If we purchase from the boutique/AD, can we get any discount from them?

I'd ask for 15% off minimum, though wait to see if PP announces a five-year warranty first. An FP Journe is a better timepiece, so trying them may be a better decision in the long run.

Forget the 5960, buy a PM Daytona or, if you don't want to wait for your AD to get the Daytona, a Day-Date.

For 50k you better absolutely LOVE the watch you are getting - the multitude of options makes me think you are not strongly attached to any watch in particular. Everyone here will have a different answer, but since this is to commemorate your own birthday only your opinion matters.

Value wise - safe to assume everything except most in demand SS sport watches will lose value, and SS watches will as well in a few decades when the tastes will shift (same way YG fell out of favor for RG, and now looks to be making a comeback). On the top end you will have very limited production watches increase in value simply due to them being discontinued and not many existing in the market (I'm talking 150K+ Grand Complications). At 50k you are kinda out of luck.

Personal recommendation - have you looked at 5960/1A? Patek, AC+Chrono, in steel, discontinued? You can get them for 50-60k. Otherwise 5235G (Patek, Regulator, discontinued), I adore this watch.

I picked up the 5960-01G recently and absolutely love it.

The granular blue dial is stunning in person

Thanks for the tips. This one caught my eye but I didn’t feel a ton of emotional attachment. I am really trying to broaden my horizons beyond the basic bi*** Rolex stuff but maybe that’s just what I am

If it doesn't resonate with you, then obviously there's no reason to buy it. Have you tried out FP Journe timepieces yet as their the next level up over PP?
