I bet there's no shortage of suckers for these clowns, despite people's best efforts to warn.

This was a fun read I agree but I think those on the internet, whether on forums or IG, etc that feel they have "exposed" and thus prevented another hapless buyer from getting fooled by these two dealers or others are not seeing the real picture. The internet is actually the most difficult place to pull a fast one when it comes to selling questionable watches, as this thread and IG follow up comments illustrate, and these shysters know it and don't put much stock in their online success at it. The REAL dangers for the uninitiated-less experienced watch collectors are in-person transactions. Slippery dealers know it, as do sharp collectors. Whatever questionable watches online experts identify are not going to get vaporized, they are simply going to be sold by the same crook elsewhere, so like it or not there is no less crimes committed with online exposure.
If the internet was THE place for doing business in the vintage watch world, then crooks wouldn't bother with store fronts, offices or watch shows. Those are the places where the slick make most of their shady scores. Don't expect to see questionable dials, cases or what-not on public display at these in-person locales...they are not that stupid. That stuff gets pulled out when they identify a possible sucker. "Here's one I just got and you might like this one better". Happens all day long and most of the time you never read about it online. Also, anyone that thinks the young seller in question in this thread has "ruined" his chances in the watch world, think again. He is going to build up his cash reserves until he can go big time, shielded by some lofty sounding business name and people under employ as public fronts. Money is all he will need to keep growing, and my guess is he will. He, like Bob Maron know the key to their success is their buying power and finding stock. Selling is the easy part. |

Has anyone heard from Mr. Rottman recently? I have an odd experience to share.

I was sitting at the recent Gooding’s Amelia island sale with a collector friend who insisted I meet this young man by the name of Luke Rottman, who was in attendance at the sale and an apparent consignor. The two had met in October of last year, at a Christie’s Paris art sale. I’m told Luke approached him after noticing his vintage Submariner, and asked if he collected watches. They made a deal—Luke sold him a simple Calatrava, but never collected payment, and left immediately insisting he had to go see a painting. Luke reached out to my friend by way of Whatsapp weeks later, asking if he knew of any cars for sale and their correspondence resumed. Back to the auction. I was introduced to Luke in a small group, and one of the auction personnel referred to him as Mr. Rottman, to which he oddly replied along the lines of, “no pretense needed, call me Luke please, thank you.” He was straightforward, and not rude at all, just to strangely to the point. He wore shorts and a torn t shirt, and what I think is a Paul Newman Daytona. I asked him about his watch, and he said he was not interested in discussing watches, that if I was interested in making a deal he’d be happy to discuss, and that his watch is incredibly overvalued and that this market is unsustainable. He said he didn’t have time, and that he was not looking for any more customers. He then told one of the auction employees not to “drag” payment or (f*ck) around “please” and walked away. I have never met a young person more difficult to read than Luke. He is certainly sharp, but no one I have spoken to really understands who he is, what he does, and what his motives are. Odd fellow. Interesting to read about him here.

I think it's possible that you might have an extremely high tolerance for rudeness, Henry. ;-)

I will admit, as coarse as Rottman was, he was very straightforward. And the word from my friend and others is that he is an honest kid, just very tough.

I think this whole thread would suggest that he wasn’t very straightforward at all and arguably dishonest. At least in this (albeit lengthy) instance. For me, his rudeness, his personal attacks on people online, and his arrogance throughout it all paints a picture of a pretty unsavory person.

I am going to stick with my assessment of Henry as a nice guy who doesn't like to say bad things about people, and instead uses euphemisms like "tough" and "straightforward".
