Thinking to buy a Calatrava
Hi everyone!
I am thinking to buy my first Patek (probably the last one). Is Calatrava is the right choice? I am thinking the buy a 5196 or a vintage Calatrava, I love the sub-dial, so I will not choose the one with date. Can I have some advice whether I should choose a 5196 or a vintage Calatrava? Also, I like white gold and yellow gold, which one should I choose? Thank you! |

5196 is a great Calatrava, although it is a manual wind. You should go try it on at one of the dozen Patek ADs in HK and let us know if you like it or not.

Multiple ADs will definitely have it in stock, it is part of Patek legacy, but as everything that is not a steel sports watch nowadays it is not very popular. Same with the price being lower on the secondary market - not every reference gains value over time (in fact majority of them don't). From the current non-limited Calatrava line the only collectible will probably be 5196P.

I am sure a grey selller in HK will have one for you to try on before you make a decision.

The 5196 is a good choice. Or the new 6119 seems like it is going to be popular both aesthetically and mechanically with the new manual wind movement.
You might eventually see an update to the 5196 next year with that movement (or something similar). |

I saw the 6119G and the black dial is nice. But I don’t like the hobnail bezel.

I would look for a 5196. It’s a dress watch so the manual wind is cool with me since it will be rarely worn. If 37mm seems small for you the 5196G looks bigger since it’s all dial. The 5196R is beautiful as well and shares the same brushed dial as the 5196G. The dial on the 5196J is different from those two.

I’d consider it perfectly executed but a watch very few want sadly. The RG in particular is virtually flawless execution. I’m just happy to see them making a new movement for the line and not shying from manual wind.

Oh yes, I like the new 6119R, it looks gorgeous, the hobnail bezel makes the watch looks vintage style too.

I considered the 5196R, 5196G, and 5196P. I agree with the poster above in that the 5196P will probably be the most collectible 5196. The Breguet numerals look just like those on the stainless 570, and the dial is stunning, but perhaps a little busy. I ultimately chose the 5196G for its simplicity.

I would also suggest looking at some of the discontinued models, there's a few gems there. I recently picked up a 5127G and I love the softer curved case and crown guards.

I have a 5196j and I'm very happy with it, classic style and perfect size. I think it's the embodiment of PP.
It does get noticed a lot though because of the yellow gold and if I were choosing again today I would take the G (white gold) rather than the J (yellow gold). The white gold has all the classic lines and beautiful looks, but it's more understated. I had the G, J and R in front of me to choose from and the J just pipped it. I gather that the G is a bit harder to come by these days. |

Seems most of you guys think RG or YG would be better than WG. But as a dress watch, I think WG or YG would be better.
