Spb143 is a fantastic choice, or pony up for the SLA033 maybe. You can get one for about 3k and it’s awesome.

There are a slew of factors that go into your choice. Budget, era, style, movement type, will it be used to dive with, etc...

I have 34 Seiko divers of all budgets, eras, styles, and movement types.

Once you answer some of these questions, it will be easier to make a recommendation.

I have the navy turtle and a seiko arnie. I went with the turtle because I have smaller wrists and the small lug to lug works on my wrist. It’s accurate, settled into +6-8 seconds per day, great lume, and tough as nails. I also bought it because if the shape, it’s not like most other dive watches that all appear to pull from the submariner in one way or another for styling cues.

I have a turtle, SRP773. I usually wear watches 36mm-40mm. This is the only one that’s bigger. I have a 7 1/2 inch wrist, and it’s a little to big for me. Seiko headquarters was having a sale, and it was only $145.00. That’s the only reason I purchased it. Overall, I like the color, and love the lume. I wear it occasionally, but not to often.

Any 62mas inspired diver is a solid choice I think. Trying to decide beteen the SPB051/53 and the 143 myself. I tend towards the large size, but the 143 is very tempting.

I have about 15 Seiko Divers, from vintage 1970's (6306-7001) to current 200M/300M divers. All of mine are under $1000, but then there are the latest release limited editions and 1,000M ones that run into the thousands. There are also the vintage CAPT Willards from the 60s/70s that go for several thousand these days. All in all it depends on your (or your son's) taste and your budget.

Not knowing budget/taste I'd say SRP777 for around $400 is a good one.

I modded this Seiko SKX007 and put in an NH36 movement, new bezel and new hands for my 20 year old son and he really likes it.
