Rolex 1016 Story
This past Christmas was a particularly tough holiday for me because I found out my father was diagnosed with stomach cancer. While I new the diagnosis was extremely serious, I thought I would have several months to be with him and talk our lives together. Well as fate would have it, my father only lived 3 short weeks following his diagnosis. To put it mildly I am devastated. He was 77 and we spend many good times together. He got to watch me any my twin brother grow up and have 4 grandchildren, for that I am thankful. Anyway my mother the other day handed me a box, in it was my dad's Rolex 1016 that in 1975 my mother bought him for an anniversary gift. I remember as a child always thinking it was the coolest watch ever. However I hadn't seen it in almost 20 years because it was squirreled away in their safety deposit box. When I graduated high school I received my first rolex from my playboy uncle who was in to racing sports cars and rolex watches in particular. My uncle said to me that one of the most important things a man can own is a rolex. It will help you get to work on time and can be bartered anywhere in the world in an emergency. My father on the other hand was everything my uncle wasn't. He didn't care about material items or chasing women, he was simply a good father and extraordinary man. He provided for us and kept us grounded. So when I received my Dad's Rolex I was overcome with emotion. My mother told me no matter what you do wear it and pass it down to one of your sons. So for the last week I have worn it daily knowing that my dad is with me by my side.

I know you’re still getting over your loss and the family is likely struggling with the idea of a future without him. Very touching heirloom to be given after his passing. Now you have the duty of caretaker for one of your sons.
Good luck in the future and hope you can keep it as original as possible. I know how challenging that can be. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro

So sorry for your loss. That is devastating. What a wonderful piece you get to wear in remembrance of your father. It’s one of the greatest vintage pieces you can own IMO.

That’s a beautiful watch. I’m sure you’ll wear it pride as you should. It’s an honour to be given such a watch. I’m sure your father would be pleased that you’re wearing it.

Sorry for your loss but these stories are reasons I got into watches. 8 years ago I said to myself i want to pass something down to my son. It seems like this hit home for you. Loss sucks and inevitable but having that watch is a great thing.

That's a wonderful story.
Your mother must be such a great lady. Look after that watch, its an iconic Rolex. If you get it serviced, don't touch the dial and hands despite anyone offering you to put in 'brand new' ones.

My condolences on your father's passing. I lost my father unexpectedly a couple of years ago and I wear his beat up Citizen. It's worth about $25 but in a box full of Rolex, Omega, Hentschel, etc. it's my most prized watch. I really do feel a sense of connection with it and I've no doubt you'll feel the same with your fathers beautiful 1016.
