Speedmaster - leather strap or SS bracelet?

I just came out of a meeting with someone who was wearing their Speedmaster Pro on its stainless steel bracelet. It looked fantastic - very sexy. I also remember watching Apollo 13 with Tom Hanks (a great Speedmaster porn movie) and admiring all the Speedmasters on their metal bracelets.

However, I have always preferred a leather strap on the Speedmaster. I am not a fan of the standard leather deployant model fitted by Omega on the Speedmaster (too bulky for my 6.5 wrist). My solution was to buy my Speedie Pro with the metal bracelet and then fit a traditional leather buckle black Omega strap in the Omega Boutique before I walked out with my new watch. It looks great and is a bit more vintage as well. Doing it this way was a little more expensive but I have the option of the stainless steel bracelet if I want it. Having seen the metal bracelet version today I'm tempted to go back to it.

What do people here prefer - leather or metal ?

For me the choice is a metal bracelet.

....but the trouble with options is that there comes a day when you have to chose

A good bracelet removal tool that makes the changes a piece of cake and you can change your mind as many times as you like.

I wear mine on the steel bracelet during the summer months, and then when fall arrives I switch it to a leather strap or a cordura strap for the winter.

I think it looks and feels great on any kind of strap or bracelet. One of the many great qualities of the Speedmaster Pro.

I like your idea of buying your Speedy with the ss bracelet. As you said, you will have the option to wear it on a leather band or swap back to ss.

In my opinion, the speedies look best on ss bracelets.

Thanks everyone. I'm going to switch mine to the ss bracelet tomorrow and give it a try. My wrist is on the smaller side of average - about 6.5 - and I wonder if big watches like the Speedmaster look better on a steel bracelet with a smaller wrist. I think the steel hugs the contours of the wrist better than leather, which can be a bit stiff and stand proud from the wrist.

My wrist is also approximately 6.5 inches. Here's what it looks like on the bracelet. I think it's really comfortable.

It looks very elegant, Dave. A good fit by the look of it.

I've only had mine a few weeks, I haven't even sized the bracelet yet, this watch looks good on everything. I am enjoying the black NATO it came with and thinking about getting the leather NATO from omega.

Get 3-7 aftermarkets for the same price. There are lots of good brands out there 95% the quality and 20% the price.

I completely agree with you: buying the leather (or nylon) nato bands from well-known manufacturers is the way to go.

If I had the Speedmaster, I'd definitely get the metal bracelet, but I bet it would live 90% of the time on a NATO or a Rally strap.

I enjoy strap options for a change once in awhile, but I can honestly say I'm a bracelet guy.

for me, it depends on the bracelet (i much prefer the vintage version without the thin polished center columns), while you can't ever go wrong with a speedy on a strap.

I have mine back on its metal bracelet now and I like it. The bracelet hugs the contours of the wrist better and looks less "stiff" than some leather straps. But I still have to say that a nice leather strap can look very classy. But let's be honest, the Speedmaster is a watch that would still look superb on a piece of old string.

One of the few models that can go either way.
