Looks like they can hold their own ... as usual, you can throw regular season stats out the window when it comes to playoff hockey.

Besides they just eliminated a team that finished 23 wins ahead of them

Idk what the hell happened to Boston. I've never seen a veteran team play so tentative and forget basics like passing. My boy Bertuzzi killed it for his UFA payday. Lyon and Bob just did not look great. If Ullmark remembered how to make saves/Montgomery stuck with the goalie rotation because Ullmark has never been a workhorse in his career Boston probably wins. I'd be up for a Mcdavid v Matthews final.

Well there goes those Cats again. Bob actually played well too. Scary proposition for the rest of the playoffs.

Yep, they’re the real deal and they’re well coached.

Leafs better tighten up their transition game, because they aren’t going to out-grit the Panthers.

Yeah those always the concern with the Leafs. Not enough grit and getting greasy. That PP after they tied it at 2 I thought for sure they were scoring.

It’s easy to see why playing against Tkachuk is everyone’s worst nightmare

Both of them. Brady single handily crush my Wings playoffs dreams in 2 games because they have 0 team toughness.

Not so sure. Would be a fun series but Bettman would probably worry about losing the US TV market without some big city US teams in the finals.

The whole Florida team is constantly and immediately in your face. A different type of team than Tampa.

Leafs are going to have to adjust to that. Don't forget that Toronto didn't even look that good against Tampa for most of the games.

They're going to have to crank it up a lot in this series. No time and space.

Agreed, we were lucky to get by Tampa

The game looks different when you watch it from ice level (or certainly if you've played before which I know you have).

I always like to think about how many "steamboats" you can count from the time the puck hits the stick till the time another guy is on you ...

It us unbelievable that when I went to see Gretzky et all in Edmonton in the 80s and then seeing him in LA when he moved here, to going to see San Jose Sharks do their training camps in the late 90s to what the players can do today.

These guys today are light years better than they were then. Even silly things like back in the day very few players could pick up the puck with their stick and hand it to the referee. Now they all can. Every player today can kick the puck up from their back foot to their stick in full flight.

Players have so little time and space today and still make perfect tape to tape passes. They can do wrist shots at 80-90 miles an hour which has a lot to do with the flex of the stick today. They can skate so much faster with the puck and guys like McDavid can make plays in traffic at closer to 30 MPH.

Makes you wonder .... if you could take McDavid back in time, how many goals does he score for the Oilers of the 80's

Yeah.

But I never do that. Every generation was working within their generation. The best back then would be the best now. Equipment, training, nutrition, injury repair, coaching, etc etc. all the players are a product of their times.

I never compare, and do the Who's Best of All Time dance.

I think one of the biggest leg up that kids have had in the last few years is things like Utube. They see this stuff, and practice in their basements and backyards for hundreds of hours. We were rarely exposed to that kind of thing. I think a lot of the stick handling skills today are a direct result of that. And the skating is coaching/ training by special teachers that come in and teach power skating and edge work.

Conversely you take a Gretzky to now without all the physical play and lawlessness in front of the net and today's equipment he probably is dominant because of his processing. Can't compare eras, people rag on the 80s but 1 guy did what Gretzky did then.

I agree it’s silly to compare eras. Just a passing thought.

Overall hockey players today are just better athletes.

No smoking on the bench

Right. Training camp was for getting in shape back in the day. Now they are in shape year round.

Yeah the game definitely changed once they took the ash trays off the bench and out of the dressing rooms.

Kings fan here. Had the luck of becoming a fan about a year before Gretzky arrived in LA. What a time to be alive. Rollerblades had also recently came out and we would break into our elementary school and play rollerhockey all weekend long 'til the sun set. Those were the days!

Ok, sorry, back to talking about the pros... I took a friend of mine to one of the home games in LA against the Oilers, he noted "Who the heck in #97 on the Oilers? Guy looks like he is twice as fast as everyone else out there." lol.

Man, that Oilers PP is deadly. I need to go to Vegas for some work tomorrow, likely going to hit the Knights/Oilers game this weekend. Should I be "that guy" and show up in Kings gear?

Thanks, Brian! I've been lucky and had the chance to watch hockey (at all levels) at quite a few different arenas, but I've never been to T-mobile in Las Vegas.

Anybody who wants to see an absolutely amazing video/movie of Connor McDavid, should watch Whatever It Takes. It tells the very under reported story of about 3years ago during the last game of the season when McDavid was tripped by Mark Giordano as he was flying towards the goal at about 30 MPH. McDavid hit the goalpost with his leg just below the knee.

He completely tore his PCL, had tears to both his medial and lateral menisci, a completely torn in half popliteus muscle, and a fracture of the tibial plateau.

He was told by 2 different doctors he’d need surgery and rehab would take a year and there was no guarantees he’d be able to play.

He got a 3rd opinion, opted for no surgery and rehabbed it every day for up to 10 hours a day, using various specialists and trainers and was back for preseason, better than he was the previous year.

The popliteus muscle in the back of the knee was completely severed and they got it to grow back together.

The whole thing was pretty hush hush because the Oilers didn’t want it out there how badly he was hurt.

It’s on Amazon Prime if you want to see it. An incredible story of an amazing athlete, and the advances in training regimens and thinking in sports medicine.

1 of my great regrets was not going to Vegas for the Cup clinching game for Washington. Wives ruin every good idea lol. Then she comes back after and asks why we didn't go.

We had a church near my house who had a perfectly flat huge parking lot they had resurfaced. At 1 end it has a 4 car garage that was perfect end boards. We played from sun up to sun down there for years. 1 summer day it was so 1 guy's wheels started to melt.

Go Kights Go!! We do need to stay out of the box at all costs against that Oiler power play though; it almost cost us game 1!
