The holiday is to remember the fallen. We the living get our day in November.

Never forget.

To the brave citizen soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice so the rest of us could continue to enjoy the great gifts of our democracy and freedoms. I fervently hope they did not die in vain.

I always think of this guy, my son- in- law, Tony.:

When he was killed, he left behind, my daughter, and my 3 eldest grandchildren, who were 2 1/2, 1 1/2, and 4 mos. old. It was a horrible time. On Monday, as I do every Memorial Day, for the past few years, I will release a single white dove, especially for Tony, at a local cemetery’s remembrance ceremony. The dove will fly back to our ranch. There will be a ceremonial missing man formation flyover, at the event.
Tony was buried at Arlington, and for reasons known only to the military, my daughter was escorted by General George Milley, who is now head of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, for the entire U.S. Military.
My fiancé, John, who has a dove release business called “Wings of Love”, will release several dozen white doves to honor all our brave fallen men and women. He has done this for many years, free of charge, on Memorial Day.

At Lodge last week I played the video Mansions of The Lord during a break in the action. I also explained that although I knew the difference between Veterans Day, and Memorial Day, I asked all the veterans to stand and be recognized.

I’m very sorry about your son-in-law.

During the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, my understanding is that at a certain point, a general officer was assigned to every funeral as an escort.

Memorial Day 2023

"Taps" was first played at Harrison's Landing, VA July 1862, and in 1891 became a standard tribute for USA Military funerals.

Perfect Taps played in a breath taking, solemn scene of the fallen heroes.

French caretakers take the sand from Omaha Beach in Normandy and scrub them into the letters to give them the brown/gold coloring.

They do this for all 9,386 soldiers who died.

France also gave us this land as American soil.

Probably unusual for the Commander of the entire US Army, though, as General Mark Milley ( I inadvertently called him George, in my original post.) was, at the time. I think he may have volunteered, because Tony was a local boy. I have fiollowed his career, and he will retire, as Chairman of the joint Chiefs of Staff, this Fall. In any case, we are grateful that the Army’s supreme Commander, escorted Erica, and handed her Tony’s flag:

In another odd twist, the DOD is only supposed to give gold star pins to immediate family members, but the officer in charge of that, could tell, from talking to me, how close I was to Tony, and she gave me one, also. I wear it every Memorial Day, and Veteran’s Day.

I’m glad that GEN Milley was able to serve your family in such a hard time.

All the best,
David
