Much love for the 5170g?

I'm becoming fond, but never really see posts. Discontinued a year or so ago - some still around even in the Salon's, which I guess show they're not hot hot hot

But do we like?

Several things are in play here. The new movement was not well received by the serious collectors who think the Lemania based movement is the better movement and also finished better. The PM dress market began its softening about when this reference started and the strength in the watch market is SS sports type models. Plus this particular model does not have the luminous hands the 5370 has and therefore suffers from severe legibility issues in lower light. In many photos you cannot make out the hands at all against the black dial.

This iteration of 5170 is beautiful. Well balanced, square pushers, breguet numerals and perfect size. It is just not as popular as the Nautilus and Aquanaut sadly.

I've made no secret of my love for the 5170... a great reference, not a hot watch currently which made choice of metal and purchasing options plentiful... I have been wearing the watch as my daily most Mon-Thur and I love it. Legibility can be an issue in dim light...but it just means I have a reason to stare at my watch for a few extra seconds!

What I like about the P so much more is that you don't have Arabic (or otherwise) numbers around the dial, which I think clutters up a chrono. But it is a very nice watch.

Interesting to hear thoughts about why the movement isn't so beloved. I always thought the big reason everyone wanted a 5070 vs. 5170 is that the movement was more limited since it wasn't in-house, not that it was better.

Very biased as I have a white dial 5170G. Would definitely consider trading for the 5170P but prefer it so much more to the current chronograph.

I think it is a great piece, beautiful black dial and nicely sized.

I do think this is a nice piece and underloved, but when I saw it with a Dato, well the Dato soon took all my attention, front and back.

I prefer the white dial 5170g. A friend had the black dial version, and I found the hands difficult to read. It is a beautiful watch!

A beautiful watch in my opinion, I had the white dialled 5170G which is the one I favour above all the others in the 5170 range. Again another watch I would like to add back to the collection, I selling it to fund a grand complication, I just didn't have the funds for both at the time.

It's absolutely awesome. I personally like the white dial (pulsation) in white gold the best. But they are all beautiful.

patek hold the value

Oh yeah..
Most of the time it is not true. Especially in case of 5170g-010. When it was released in 2015 it was all praise for this chronograph with a price tag of $ 81,000. Look at the prices now, it is selling for as a pre-owned piece. I am sure the person who sold it to the dealer got lot less than what the advertised prices are.

So, I wonder who started the phrase..Patek holds its value..
I have heard that as soon as you buy the new Patek from the Authorised Dealer it is devalued just like a car. It is true for lot of references such as 5370P-001, 5160R-001 or 5204/1R-001

But people may be finding pleasure in another Patek advertising line which says. "You really do not own a Patek, You hold on for the next generation.

Love the black dial watch...I've kinda figured out it is best in "natural light: as far as legebility goes., but love the watch. Great size with just enough weight.
I would get excited if I came across one of the 5170P's with out the diamonds. I heard a few were made that way

I saw a picture of a 5170p without the diamonds markers. I will post if I can find it. IMHO, it was nice, but not as nice as the one with the diamond markers. It just felt average, but not as special.

Love the white dial...pulsating scale and breguet numerals and a $40k price tag makes it a bargain!!

I like the 5170G-001 too. Boodles has one but they are asking over £ 62000 for it due to it being "extremely sought after" and "the chronograph seconds hand flyback" when use the reset function after stopping the chronograph.

I think 5975G is a better buy, a very smart collector obtained one at recent Christies auction.

Boodles in Sloane have certainly had that watch for eternity BNIB vintage!!! Sadly they cant discount so I guess it will be there forever. If you dont mind preowned the 5170 can be a bargain. The 5975 is proof that a LE is not a license to sprint money. Produced in lower volume than the 5650 and Anniversary models it's just died and sells at less than retail. Its definately a very interesting watch but with 60s chrono timing it is probably just a nice looking watch versus useful. The fact that it has a vertical clutch and is self winding probably gives the purist hives

You can’t beat the unique Flyback feature on that particular one off Boodles piece.

I thought I was going to love this one from pictures but in person it did nothing for me...so I bought a 5370p...that said I really like the new 5172 a lot...I saw it in person at a Patek event not too long ago and really liked it.

WOS (155 Regent street) came close with a 5205 having a "second time zone" and instantaneous day/date change at mid night.

I'm surprised Jamie didn't sell the 5170G-001 to our friend in Taiwan/Canada.

There were more 5975s produced (total 1300 in all G, J, R and P) than 5650Gs but you are right a limited edition/anniversary edition is not a licence to print money. Another example was 5159G-012 (London edition) retailed for £ 69120 in 2015 but failed to meet the low estimate of $ 64100 in Phillips auction in 2018.
