Appreciate all the comments folks.

Love the pictures too. If you know me at all, you will know that I’m all over the place. My mind changes with every new suggestion. I’m also questioning the logic behind this at all.

Everything I really like is already sky high in price. That being the case, I know myself well enough to know I might simply not even enjoy driving it. And as much as I love staring at cars, and I really do love simply staring at cars, I prefer the drive.

The thought process and the hunt continues. In the meantime, please do continue the suggestions and the pics.

Some really beautiful cars posted already. Thank you.

I passed on a roadster version of this exact car 7 yrs ago at my BMW dealer for $149,000 with under 4K miles. I kick myself daily for not buying it.

I bought the MK1 Audi R8 with manual shifting as an investment. It has only 11k miles on it. Because it is an MK1 with manual shifting this type will be a lot more worth in the future then the automatic shifting.

Seth - this is fun but definitely a tough one.

The Porsche Speedster - my sources don't anticipate they will increase in value as they are readily available and priced at a premium at the MSRP.

The GT Black Series is a tough call - the MSRP is around $389k. Will it appreciate from that point?

As a point of reference the SLS Black Series was in the $280's in 2014.
6 years later they are in the $400k range with a few thousand miles. Did they really make out appreciation wise? Forgetting maintenance and insurance cost the vehicle kept pace at a 6% return.
The non black series SLS is in the low to mid $1XX's.

I like when there's no lower variant of a vehicle - what about the SLR...

I have to agree with this logic too. There are some cool muscle cars out there of course, but the bubble on them I feel really has burst. There was a time 5-10 years ago when anything remotely rare or nice for a muscle car was easily 6 figures. It seems like a lot of them are trading around $70k that were 6 figures in years past. The tri-5 Chevys and all I feel are kind of in the same boat.

Honestly I’ll get some hate for this but with all the air cooled Porsche comments I don’t feel the bubble has burst necessarily, but they are so readily available. They went up pretty quickly in prices a few years back, but prices have been sort of stagnant since.I don’t think they will depreciate, but at this point I believe any rapid appreciation is past it’s point. So for me it’s not necessarily an investment if you will, but definitely a car you can buy and enjoy without too much worry about values.

As someone else mentioned I think look towards the 90s, and on some cars even early 2000s. Almost all these cool cars from that era have become quite devalued and I think For the most part bottomed out, which for cool and unique cars that are beginning to be classic and desirable or collectible they will go up from there. People that grew up in that era and appreciate them are getting to the point they can afford them. I just sold my 91 Nissan Silvia that had oddly enough appreciated about $4-5k in 2 years. The icons from the 80s and 90s I think are the future of car investing.

However in my opinion that might not be as much as we see historically because there are less car guys/girls in the younger generations.

Agree, there's a big bubble and if you want to buy at top-of-the-market that'll cost you dearly. And yes, carrying costs is also a factor.

Have never been a fan of resto-mod cars, makes no sense.

Original chassis, original engine, original paint, etc is the way to go imho. Personally, it's a money pit unless you get a new Ford F40, ltd ed F-car, or the like at msrp. i'd avoid Lambos in today's market, yet BOY do those guys want to hard sell you one.

Oh, and avoid ALL Rollers and Bentley cars.

This is the conclusion I am coming up with as well.

Not too worried about the carrying costs. I am prepared for that.

I might just shift gears again.

This is what you should get, a regular SLS coupe. You will not lose money on this and you can rack up the miles and actually enjoy.

Get an air cooled 911, 930, 964, 993. Not crazy money, fun to drive, maintenance isn't crazy expensive, and you can put miles on them without really diminishing their value. If you buy any relatively recent exotic car or hyper car, you will end up spending a lot on maintenance so you will be lucky if it holds its value as maintenance will cut into it's ability to appreciate.

Seth already owns 2 Porsches, a 991 Targa GTS and a Cayman Gt4 981.

If he adds another Porsche, it should be a Carrera GT imo, but keeping that running will be expensive.

Yes, but those are modern Porsches. An air cooled 911 is nothing like what he already owns. I've driven lots of modern Porsches and air cooled cars too. The air cooled car is worlds apart in terms of how they drive, and they have a lot more hand workmanship. They are also basically bullet proof compared to modern exotics. Many of my friends with modern watercooled Porsches have gone back and bought air cooled 911s. Several say their modern Porsches don't get as much seat time any more, and if they could only keep one Porsche it would be the air cooled car.

The Carrera GT is a nice looking car, but those are a real handful, unless one has taken several performance driving school classes at Skip Barber/Bob Bondurant etc. And, yes the cost of ownership/maintenance/insurance etc., will be very pricey.

I don’t think the car has to be fancy, so long as it’s popular.

I’m thinking of buying a Honda Civic Eg hatchback.

Very popular where I am from and they are not made anymore.

I want to drive one enjoy it for a couple of years and then sell it for what I paid for or maybe even make some money off of it.

One example is a Nissan 240sx.

I bought it in college for $1500. Sold it about 7 years later, after I put tons of miles in it, for $4000.

Not a fancy car.

Just pretty popular.

If I’m not mistaken I’ve noticed that NA miatas and NB miatas are also increasing in price.

Buy one now, drive it, keep it mostly original, and one day sell it to a hardcore Miata fan for the same price or more!

You will love the 90s-early 2000’s Acura NSX. Many exotics copied the NSX platform. The car is timeless and will keep climbing in value. A few clean examples surpassed 100k on BringAtrailer auctions. IMG_5783.jpg

I've had my eye on a CLK63 Black Series for a while...only 500 made and not as pricey as the SL or SLS.

What about the new Morgan Plus Four, with an aluminum chassis and manual gear box?

Or a light car like a Lotus or a Caterham?

Have you ever tried one?

In order to answer properly, can you tell us which cars you currently have in the collection?

What's your budget?

There are a lot of wonderful cars in my street, but the one turning everyone's head is my neighbor's 458 Speciale. What a dream car

2020 Huracan Evo
2019 911 Targa GTS (manual)
2016 Cayman GT4 (also manual, but only drive it on the track).

Daily a Raptor.

I want this to be a little different.

Agree on the SLS. That really might tick all the boxes of what I am looking for.

Going to see what I can find in person and drive. Still thinking about other options. Open to all ideas.

Had a 458. Not sure I want another. While I live Ferrari, I’m not sure the newer ones are for me. Maybe they are. And maybe they will be someday. But for the moment, I don’t think so.

Budget is flexible for sure. Depends on the car and the real ability to retain value.

But as stated above, the wind in these sales is waning. I’m not sure I’m ready for this. So I’m taking my time.
