Legit check Rolex Submariner 1680

Hi to everyone,

first of all I hope this is the correct category to ask a question like this!

I'm new to the forum (and vintage watches) and looking for advice on the following 1680 I'm about to buy.
Is everything legit? At least the dial seems to be a tritium service dial, if I done my research right?!

Thanks in advance! Any kind of help is appreciated

Kindly,

Sebastian

Who is the seller, is it someone with a solid reputation or an anonymous eBay chancer?

Just my personal observations:
The “S” in the STEEL is slightly different from the other “S”
The “E” looks different from each other in Stainless and Steel
The “E” also different in the REGISTERED DESIGN. Compare the middle horizontal line and you can see it.
The serial number 0 is not aligned with the other numbers, looks a but lower.

Legit check Rolex Submariner 1680

With vintage RolexTudor watches there is no free lunch. You will have to pay for the watch you want.

You may beable to find a vintage Tudor somewhere for a little cheaper but it prob not a sub.

So if this was 1/2 the going rate, now you know why.

Don’t know where I wrote that I’m looking for free lunch or a cheap example! Just asked for your opinion on this watch as I‘m new to the vintage game :)

Don't take it personally, it was just a warning that a fat chicken for a chick's price is a just a way to lure potential buyers.

Have fun!

The serial and 1680 numbers are just spaced much greater than my Mark 3 case. Not even the same ballpark.

The spacing of the serial and 1680 is about the same as my -78 1680, it is just the placement that differs, it is about on letter to the left compared to mine.

Here's a picture of mine for reference. It was used for diving for many years by a relative and was never serviced until I took it in for a service in 2010 when I bought it.

You did well asking on here. It actually helps me by seeing serial sets and the discussions. Once you hit a few hundred you can get the feel for the fakes. Look over hq Milton’s photos. He has legit watches and the photos are both good and very consistent.

Thanks again for your help!

I would like to give you an interesting update:
After I showed the seller this thread (he seems to be a nice guy IMHO) he was more than suprised, that the case obviously is fake! As he wanted to get a proof he sent the watch to the rolex HQ in Geneva asking for a cost estimate regarding a full service and "legit" check. Oddly enough they did sent him a quote for servicing. As far as I know they wouldn't have done this if the watch/case is fake?! Any opinions/experiences on this?

Ps: He showed me the letter from rolex with the cost estimate!

Curious to know what are the telltale signs that this is a service dial? I've always thought it was simply the way the coronet might be a little wider than on an original dial, but this example stumps me.

Engravings can be a bit of a red herring for identifying a fake case. I've posted a couple I was sure didn't look right but later checked out. The usual story is that vintage watches were engraved by hand and maybe the technician had a rough night earlier.

Would they not simply insist on putting on a new case, assuming everything else legit?

Wouldn’t it be a seemingly off serial if this is a service case?

Worth asking about this watch over the VRF - there a couple of guys there that know engravings to another level.
