I want to buy a Rolex
I fully expect to get ripped apart on this thread. It is my first post in this site and I have to say I love reading all of the posts. So here it is. I want to buy a 126610LN from an AD in New Jersey. I don’t want to buy grey market. I own some other watches that I live, but I don’t buy a new watch every year (or even every other year). I don’t have a buying history and I’ve put my name on a list with an AD.
What else can I do? What else should I be doing? Do I really need to buy 20k worth of jewelry for a realistic shot to buy a SS sub? Go ahead, roast me, but I’ve called 6-8 dealers and they’ve told me the same thing, not much of a chance. Even the flagship store on Madison Avenue doesn’t have subs on display. Is there any hope for me to buy one from an AD or should I give up the ghost and just go grey? |

Getting a sub isn’t “that” hard. I would go in person FOR SURE to a couple and express interest and your situation. Drop in every once in a while (but don’t be annoying).

Visit the ADs in person and just chat. Show your interest and if you want and are surprised, be prepared to put a deposit.
Patience, persistence and showing genuine love for watches will generally get you the watch. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

There is hope if you invest the time and a little bit of money on other things in their showroom.
Less than $1,000 on other things has gotten me an SD43, Sub(ND) and a BLRO. |

Good Luck in getting a SUB. I think you will just have to put your name on many lists and visit the AD often. Along the way the AD's will offer you everything but what you want. Hang in there and keep visiting and keep asking.

You’ll have to put the work in. Since you don’t want to be buying other watches, grey could be your answer here.

I have bought all my timepieces from the boutique/AD. I must have a very good luck with Rolex, I found the right boutique with a wonderful SA, she help me got most of the timepieces that I wanted in the very short period.
You can do the same thing, go to talk to them, show your interest and have your name on the waitlist, visit them once in awhile just to keep in touch, soon you will get what you are asking for. Good luck!

Go to the AD and talk. No expectations - just talk. Worst case you have a good conversation. Best case ...

Buy the grey one, enjoy it .
When you get one from an AD, eventually, keep it and sell the original grey purchase.By that time you will get your money back . Win-win . |

I personally don't think you are required to buy other items at a jewelers but I guess some have been told that??

Acquiring a Sub with no purchase history is difficult but by no means impossible. I think the x-factor is putting in the legwork—many people with no history stop by a single AD, put their name on a list, and do nothing else and then act surprised when they never get the call.
Your best bet is to visit multiple ADs, strike up good conversations, and visit multiple times (maybe once a month or so). Don’t put all your eggs in one basket, and be patient. If you want the submariner quickly, your best bet is to go grey; if you’re willing to put in the legwork, I think getting one in a few months’ time is very doable, particularly in the Tri-State area. Good luck! |

How old are you? What else you you have? Why do you want one?
You need to be vetted, qualified, and have a good story to get a Sub. |

If you will not go to the grey marketplace, all you have to do is find an AD who will list you, that you believe has actually listed you, as opposed to brushed you off. If possible, aim to achieve this at more than one AD. Then wait. It will take as long as it takes.
It will also help if you start buying things. Not things you don't want, but things you do want. As long as you are not in a hurry, your watch will turn up somewhere, sometime. There's no magic to it. |

I like the do both approach. Buy grey now, wear it and enjoy it, while simultaneously putting in the effort with a couple different local AD's. If you're successful with an AD you can sell the other one or keep it and start a collection. The supply/demand dilemma is annoying but works really really well for the long term health of our hobby. I hope there's a huge supply weakness forever

I own a hulk, sub date, Bluesy and DSSD all from AD’s and none of them the same one. I am not a whale and have accumulated those over a 10 yr period or so.
Go in person. Show a genuine interest in the brand. Two of mine I have got while on a cruise in different countries. Those were definitely a bit of time. They basically talk for a while and want to make sure you are not a flipper as those people walk in by the dozens all day, walk in ask for the hard to find model, get told no and walk out. They see it all the time. When I was getting my Hulk it was in the back. While I was there for an hour talking to the sales person no less than 4 people came in and asked for a hulk. All got no. 2 hours later I walked out with a hulk at 5% below MSRP and a friend that actually still sends me texts for my anniversary and Christmas. Sadly they can’t ship any watches or I am sure this person would be my honey hole and I would have all the tough ones to get. Bottom line a sub can be had. A white face Daytona, not so much. |

Since you read alot of posts here, you already know that many people just hoard these recent Rolex models watches for silly reasons.
Are you sure you want a 126610LN? Honestly, some of the older sub models are more interesting, better proportioned, and more obtainable second-hand. If still yes, best of luck. You will get one eventually! |

As long as you realize that it’s going to take a bit of time then you are golden. Just do your rounds and sweet talk the hell out of your AD.
Many examples on here from people that get the watch without previous purchase history. Good luck! Enviado desde mi iPhone utilizando Tapatalk

This. And also, you can always buy a used one while you are looking at getting a new one in future from AD. Once the new one arrives with your name on it, sell the used one and live happily ever after. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Like others have mentioned there is no secret answer. I think scoring a submariner is 20% effort and 80% luck. I was able to snag a sub (114060) and Batman (126710 blnr) with NO prior purchase history and I did NOT buy $20k in jewelry. I went to 3 AD’s and chatted up the SA’s. At the 3rd AD I really hit it off with the SA. We are similar ages, similar interests outside of watches, etc. Over the next 12 months I did buy some jewelry from this SA, but only two pieces for a total of $3300. They were nice and something I wanted to buy my wife anyway. I doubt these small purchases influenced the SA at all. I truly think it was our personal connection. In summary, my advice is to find an SA you connect with and be genuine. Check in with him/her in-person occasionally and you might get lucky. If you don’t want to wait just buy grey. A sub is only $2-4k over retail. Good luck! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Guaranteed way
Find a friend who has the buying power or relationship with AD
Ask them to please do you a favor Have THEM approach THEIR AD Have them buy it for you Either by telling the AD the truth ( buying for a friend) Or telling the AD it is for them GUARANTEED |

Ask to be put on the list. You might get the call in as quick as a month. I did. Politely check in every 6 weeks or so.

Thank you all for the advice. Is there a retailer in NJ that anyone recommends in particular? I have been going to the Sydney Thomas in Short Hills, but am also thinking it might be good to start talking to people at Hartger’s in Wyckoff. It looks like a pretty good watch retailer, what have other people’s experiences been? They also sell Patek and that is on the list of a watch for when I turn like 50 or retire.

Pay the few k premium on grey, save yourself the face, time and dancing in you need to do. Otherwise, yes you need to probably buy $20 k of crap you don’t want to realistically get in a reasonable timeframe.

If you put little to no value on your time, go ahead and hang out at ADs frequently and develop a relationship. Maybe you won't have to buy much you don't want to get your Sub someday.
If you value your time, a few trusted sellers could probably do a deal tomorrow with delivery Monday. All of them could do a deal Monday with delivery Tuesday. |

ADs do not sell subs to new clients. They don't need or want new clients. Well, not clients like you who ask for subs.
Given your current situation, here's what you can try: 1: (Grey route) Save up the extra money and buy your sub from a trusted seller. The Actual Retail price is $13k to $14k for the time being. That is subject to change. Advantage(s): No BS/games/lies, usually great customer-service, you get to retain your dignity, no groveling, no time-wasting, no hidden expenses, no false promises. 2A: (AD route) Buy whatever the AD has (usually non-desired models) and immediately sell them on the secondary market, most likely at a loss. You are going to lose money. Now you've established a "relationship" with the AD, congratulations. They MIGHT offer to take another $9k from you and "offer" you the "opportunity" for a sub, in exchange for your time, money, and work you put into acting as a contractor by flipping other models on their behalf. Advantage(s): You get the magical "text" or "call". 2B: (AD route) Offer to purchase a large bundle but demand a sub as a stipulation in the deal. This might work if you include a ladies two-tone Datejust or a less-desired PM piece, or something expensive from another brand that usually sells at a steep discount. The total cost will be $25k or more. Ideally, this would be a good strategy if you actually want the second (or perhaps even third) model. Downside is you need to be ready for the large up-front purchase. Advantage(s): No false promise and you get immediate access to the sub that is readily available in the dealer's back-room. |
