A recent thread had dozens of people squabbling over whether or not it was safe to take a Datejust on a run!

Imagine asking if the latest and greatest Datejust is rugged enough to take on a run - from the company that produced the first watch to survive a 10-hour swim across the English Channel, who have produced dozens of models worn by soldiers in austere conditions - including an entire line of watches for aviators in the British RAF, not to mention all of the divers putting the watch through its paces.

I cannot fathom spending so much money on a good without researching the basics of its history. Why blow so much money on a watch brand as storied as Rolex if you can’t be bothered to appreciate its rich legacy or the engineering of the watch in the first place.

Agree with the other posters here that if an owner feels they can’t wear the watch during the course of their daily lives, they either bought the wrong model or can’t afford it in the first place.

Afraid today the media puts the main fright into wearing Rolex watches by scaremongering reporting. Myself been wearing Rolex watches for well over 50 years and in countries that many would say its not safe. Yet never had any problem but I dont go around in these places with a sticker on my forehead hey look at me I am wearing a Rolex.
Not a great take... The media are reporting stolen high-end watches because these are $10,000+ items. Theft and robbery for luxury watches is more common now a days. That is a fact. Largely due too the more recent popularity of watches/watch market. Social media has made everyone aware of what wealth looks like/easier to spot/find. I know many people who have gotten there watch/car stolen within the last 2 years.

Ah...but will your Rolexes work in the incredibly thin Martian atmospher, very low pressure and cold temperatures way below 100° Celsius? You might have to wear a Speedmaster Moon Watch instead. You must let us know...!!!

Ha, that's great. It should be required reading for any new Rolex owner. Your watch will get scratched when you wear it. That's the point. Most of them are tool watches.

Roger. It is great that you are passionate about the forum. But you might want to take the time to think about what you are reading before you call another member stupid.

Not only was your post rude, but your “take” totally missed the mark. The main thrust is mocking people who are worried about getting dust on their watch. Not making light of violent crime.

I do
Couple of points

1- As someone who has had a knife pulled on them followed by the demand for my (empty) wallet and my (non rolex) watch, here's what went down. I gave the guy what he asked for, he ran off and then I filed a Police report (followed by an insurance claim)

2- If you can afford it, you should be able to insure it, if you cant, then you cant afford it

YMMV, but i wasn't a quivering wreck following the encounter
Crime happens
I know people who were beaten VERY badly because they refused to give up their Nikes
IME, if someone pulls a weapon on you and demands your stuff, the easiest way to defuse the situation is to give it to them

I aint about to get stabbed for a piece of Stainless Steel (thats insured) and likewise am i not going to enjoy wearing the things i've worked hard for

Larry, as mentioned above, there's another thread about wearing a Rolex while jogging. Some of the responses are written as if the Rolex will be affected by getting sweaty or receiving some light impact from heavier foot falls. It just amazes me that members here don't understand the toughness of the watches they wear and insist on pampering them as if they'd melt in the rain. Glad to see you post about history and genetics of the line. These are amongst the toughest watches ever made, If cheap disposable quartz watches hadn't come along there'd have never been a doubt about what the purpose of a Rolex was.

Just posted in another thread about my dad, who has a day-date he's worn since the mid-'80s pretty much non-stop. I didn't think much of it then, but I grew up watching him gardening in the thing-pulling weeds, trimming hedges, etc. The only time it came off was if he was traveling to the Philippines. Other than that, though, he put the watch through its paces.

My perception of a Rolex is shaped from my dad's experience with his - an item precious enough to safeguard against getting stolen by using common sense, but tough enough to handle just about any day-to-day activity you may put it through.
