Comparing Explorers: 14270 vs 124270

Below are a couple of visual comparisons between my old 14270 (U serial circa 1999) vs my latest acquisition 124270 (purchased 2022).

I didn’t make an actual measurement of the case but it looks a wee bit thicker

Outside of the lumed numerals, the lug width and bracelet taper of 124270 really transform the proportions of the newer Explorer vs the older models. I now have a greater appreciation for the subtle changes Rolex makes as the product line evolves

Thanks for the comparison pictures!

Clearly there are differences, but they’re subtle.

The lumed numerals where honestly the only reason I switched to the 124270. As attached as I was to my 14270, the lack of lume in the numerals (unlike the 1016) was a flagrant omission by Rolex, otherwise it was in my opinion the perfect watch

The lume is the only thing I miss with the newer one, but it’s not enough, for me. I can still read the old style fine in the dark.

Only thing that would be a separator for me would be the presence of lugholes.

I’ve put my 114270 on a leather strap and Tudor deployant. Tilted it toward bit more dressy, really like it that way and it compliments the smaller size than I typically wear.

Thanks for posting. I also prefer the color of the new Chromalite display!

It's marginal but I think I prefer the current 124270. I'm just glad it's offered in 36mm diameter size again.

I much prefer drilled lugs because they make changing straps MUCH easier. To me, once lug holes were removed, Rolex officially completed the transition away from tool Watch to luxury item.

Fun Fact: the lug mounting points on the 114270 are closer to the case than on the 14270, so the older 14270 are much more friendlier to straps because the increased clearance

FWIW, I believe the thickness of the two is supposed to be about the same. It looks like they may be seated differently in that pic.

Nice pics and interesting comparisons. I have to say I'm partial to the 14270 but both are really nice.
